Raiders split final day of Blue Gray Classic

MT falls to No. 21 Texas Tech and downs No. 44 Auburn
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – No. 27 Middle Tennessee men's tennis concluded its final day at the 72nd Blue Gray Classic Saturday with an even 1-1 record after falling to No. 21 Texas Tech 4-1 and flying over No. 44 Auburn 4-2 at the O'Connor Tennis Center.
Texas Tech claimed doubles point on Friday afternoon, the Blue Raiders were eager heading into singles.
The Red Raiders came out hot with two wins on court two and court five, upping their lead to 3-0. Sophomore Pavel Motl put the Blue Raiders on the board with a tight 7-5, 6-1 win on court six.
Leading 3-1, Texas Tech clinched the match on court one as No. 53 Parker Wynn dropped Tom Moonen, 6-3, 6-3 for the Red Raider victory.
The Blue Raiders were set to take on No. 44 Auburn Tigers in the final match of the 72nd Blue Gray Classic.
Looking to bounce back against Auburn, the Raiders commanded the lead by collecting the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3.
After a 6-1 victory by Edge and Moonen, Rauch and Rocha stepped up to win 6-2 to notch the doubles point.
With a 1-0 advantage, the Raiders won four first sets against the Tigers with sophomore Francisco Rocha claiming the first singles victory with a straight set 6-2, 6-1 win on six.
The Tigers responded with a win on court four to cut the lead to 2-1.
At No. 5, Motl claimed a close 7-6, 6-2 victory to put the Raiders within one to clinch a win over SEC's Auburn.
But, Auburn added another point to board winning on three in a hard fought three set match from Chris Edge.
With two Blue Raiders left on the courts, senior Tom Moonen played hero, taking down No. 1 Tim Dollman of Auburn, 7-6, 6-3, 6-3 for the win.
Middle Tennessee advanced to 11-4 to finalize the Blue Gray Classic.
The Raiders will return to action Feb. 28 for a doubleheader against UAB and UAPB at home, parking and entry is free.
