MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Men's Golf is set to embark on what is sure to be one of the most unique seasons in program history, with the fall slate finally set to begin on Monday.
The sports world has looked far different over the last several months amidst the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, and competitive golf is sure to be a welcome sight for Head Coach Mark McEntire and his squad.
"We are all ready to get the season started," McEntire exclaimed. "It has been a long time and there has been a range of emotions since last spring. It was a different summer for the players not having as many tournaments to play in, so I expect a little rust when we finally get started."
The Blue Raiders open their campaign on the road with a short trip south to the Scenic City Collegiate (Sep. 21-22) hosted by in-state rival Chattanooga at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn.
Tuesday's final round will be streamed live on ESPN3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. CT, marking the first time the Blue Raiders have ever competed on a live broadcast in a regular season event.
Middle Tennessee makes another southward trip at the end of the month to compete in Conference USA foe UAB's Graeme McDowell Invitational (Sep. 29-30) at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.
McEntire's squad hosts their home event, The Intercollegiate at The Grove, for the seventh consecutive year this season on Oct. 12-13. C-USA rivals LA Tech, Southern Miss and WKU, among others, join the Raiders in the 14-team field at The Grove.
"I think we have a very good and challenging fall and at excellent venues," McEntire added. "The Honors Course, Greystone and The Grove are all tremendous tests. We will have the chance to play six players at every tournament and we look forward to getting some players additional reps."
The Blue Raiders lose only one regular member of last season's lineup entering the 2020-21 season with redshirt senior Tanner Owens returning to lead the way after a team-leading 71.8 stroke average in 2019-20.
Redshirt junior Cooper Sears is also back in the fold in 2020-21 as are redshirt sophomores Michael Barnard and Palmer Sadlowski and redshirt freshmen Mattias Varjun, Gavin Clements and Steven Haremski.
Redshirt sophomore Josh Morris is also back after redshirting the 2019-20 season while McEntire added Lipscomb graduate transfer Connor McKay and incoming freshmen Parker Clarke, Kevin Jegers, Daniel Love, Logan Spurrier and Owen Stamper in the offseason.
"I am excited that we have some depth this year," McEntire said. "We were able to pick up Connor McKay from Lipscomb and I expect him to be a difference maker. You throw him in with Tanner, Michael, Cooper and the new faces and we will have some competition for the last two spots that will push everyone to get better!"
