MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Head Coach Jeff Breeden and his Middle Tennessee Softball staff have added a fifth signee in the 2021 recruiting class, as Laura Mealer signed on Jan. 14 to officially become a future Blue Raider.
Mealer, a Chapel Hill, Tennessee native, currently plays shortstop at Forrest High School for former Blue Raider Shelby Stinnett (Lightfoot). Stinnett played at Middle Tennessee from 2011-14 and is still tied for fifth all-time in pitching appearances as a Blue Raider with 95.
"Laura's confidence, competitiveness and passion for the game will be an asset for MT's program," Stinnett said. "I feel privileged to share my alma mater with a high caliber player such as Laura. I can't wait to see what she brings to the next level, and I have no doubt she'll do great things."
Mealer helped her team win a state championship as a sophomore. With one season remaining in her high school career, Mealer has already been named to the All-State Team twice and made the All-District Team three times. Additionally, Mealer has added an Offensive MVP award to her résumé.
Stinnett's former college coach and Mealer's future college coach, Breeden is excited to have Mealer become a Blue Raider in 2021-22.
"Laura's middle infield skills are high, and she is a pure hitter. She'll be a player that impacts our program on day one," Breeden said of his team's latest signee. "We look forward to seeing her in a Blue Raider uniform. She should really push this recruiting class to a high level."
Mealer joins Claire Czajkowski, Anyce Harvey, Abby Shoulders and Claire Woods in MT's 2021 recruiting class. Breeden improved his infield depth for the future with last Thursday's signing. Mealer is the second 2021 signee that plays in the middle infield and fourth middle infielder signed with MT in the last two years.
"We've addressed all of our needs with this recruiting class," Breeden added. "I'm really excited about where our team is going in the next few years, and I think we're going to be fun to watch."
