Blue Raiders to host 23 home games including MTSU Invitational
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Over 10 months after the 2020 season was paused and later canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Middle Tennessee softball has finalized its 2021 schedule.
The continued presence of COVID-19 will most likely cause this spring's schedule to change as the season progresses. For the latest scheduling updates and information, stay tuned to all MT Softball social media channels throughout the season.
MT Head Coach Jeff Breeden and staff have scheduled five non-conference tournaments and nine local non-conference games in addition to five Conference USA series this spring.
"With COVID-19 testing going on, we're going to have to be flexible with our travel plans," Breeden said. "Our travel has taken on a different level of planning with trying to keep people socially distanced.
"Right out of the gate at The Spring Games, that's going to be a bit of a bubble, with all the teams staying in one hotel and no one else. We're going to follow COVID-19 protocol and keep our fingers crossed, and hopefully we'll get to play."
The Blue Raiders will start out at The Spring Games in Leesburg, Florida on Feb. 12-14 and will revisit that tournament and site once again on March 5-7. All of MT's contests played at The Spring Games can be seen on FloSoftball.com.
MT will spend the second and third weekends of the new season in the state of Alabama, as Alabama State hosts its Black and Gold Tournament on Feb. 19-21, and South Alabama hosts the Jaguar Classic on Feb. 26-28.
For the seventh time in Blue Raider softball history and first time since 2008, Middle Tennessee will host its own regular season tournament. The MTSU Invitational is slated for March 11-14, and joining the Blue Raiders in Murfreesboro will be Dayton, North Dakota State and Illinois State.
MT's nine other non-conference games in 2021 will all be local. The Blue Raiders will host UT-Martin, Mercer and Western Illinois and travel to Austin Peay and Murray State. MT and Jacksonville State will play a home-and-home this spring.
"We're lucky that we have so many good teams to play locally," Breeden said of the remainder of MT's non-conference slate. "Within a five hour drive, we've got about 70 division I schools, so that makes for a lot of options and the ability for us to have some good midweek games."
As for C-USA play, Marshall, Western Kentucky and FIU will all travel to Murfreesboro, and the Blue Raiders will hit the road for league series at Charlotte and Florida Atlantic. All C-USA series will be a four-game set this year, with teams playing one game Friday, two on Saturday and the series finale on Sunday. MT's C-USA opening series against Charlotte is the only exception, as the Blue Raiders and 49ers will play doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday (April 2-3) before Easter Sunday.
The 2021 Conference USA Championships are slated for May 12-15 in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
"Our conference is going to be really tight, and everybody will have a shot at it. We just want to play well early in the season to get ready for that," Breeden added.
