Lady Raiders drop OT decision against Marquette
11/26/2021 2:27:00 PM | Women's Basketball
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Middle Tennessee suffered its first loss of the season as it dropped a gut-wrenching 59-55 overtime decision to Marquette in the Daytona Beach Invitational here Friday.
The Lady Raiders (4-1) had possession and a chance for win at the end of regulation; however, Kseniya Malashka's 15-footer was off the mark, and Marquette outscored Middle Tennessee 13-9 in the extra period to score the comeback win.
"It was a tough game on both sides," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We battled and gave ourselves a chance, but so did Marquette. These are the type of non-conference games we want to play. These games will help us later in the season."
Malashka and Dor Sar led Middle Tennessee with 16 points each, and Jalynne Gregory added 12 points. Sar also added five rebounds, four steals and two assists in her all-around solid outing, while Malashka added seven rebounds and two blocked shots.
Prospects for a win were looking good when Middle Tennessee built its biggest lead of the game, a 30-19 advantage with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter, but Marquette (4-1) chipped away and pulled to within 32-27 entering the final quarter.
From there, it was a back-and-forth game with each team making clutch shots in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Sar erased a 50-46 overtime deficit with back-to-back 3-pointers that gave Middle Tennessee a 52-50 lead with 2:07 remaining in the extra frame, but the Lady Raiders went 0-for-3 on their next three attempts as Marquette regain the lead and held on for the win.
The Lady Raiders had an uncharacteristically poor shooting game, connecting on just 21-of-71 field goal attempts for 29.6 percent, including 7-of-30 (23.3 percent) from beyond the arc.
"Sometimes the shots just don't fall your way," Insell said. "We had some good looks that we usually knock down, but they didn't fall today. We will keep shooting them. We are going to back away from what we do well."
Despite the off-shooting night, Middle Tennessee's defense gave it a chance to win. The Lady Raiders forced 26 turnovers and scored 18 points off those miscues.
Middle Tennessee will return to action in the Daytona Beach Invitational when it faces Illinois Saturday at 11 a.m (CT).
