Blue Raiders Drop First Match of Weekend Series with ODU

NORFOLK, Va. – The Blue Raiders drop a tough 1-3 match to the Old Dominion Monarchs on Friday night. Their conference record drops to 6-5 and overall record drops to 8-9.
The Blue Raiders had a real chance to win each set, but errors came to bite them in crucial moments. As a team, Middle Tennessee had more kills with a higher hitting percentage. Their block showed a lot of promise especially in their set two win of 25-12.
Marley Banton's ace in set one moved her up to third all-time during the 25-point rally scoring era with 81, passing Dora Peonia who had 80. Dasia Smith has been on fire lately with today's match being no exception. Smith put up 13 kills on 19 attempts with an efficient .684 attack percentage. Smith also set new career highs in total blocks (nine) and block assists (eight).
Middle Tennessee at Old Dominion Set-by-Set
The Blue Raiders were in control most of the first set with the team up late 22-16. Middle Tennessee put up seven errors after that point, as the Monarchs proceeded to take the set 27-25.
The Blue Raiders came out firing early on in the second set. Kayla Henley and Smith combined for 10 kills on 13 attempts in set two. Melisa Nur Temiz had two kills in the set that also helped spark a fire under the team. Middle Tennessee did not hold back and took the set 25-12.
The Blue Raiders' errors racked up early in the third set, giving the Monarchs an early lead to build off of. Smith continued to roll through the defense with three kills on four attempts in set three. Middle Tennessee block set up nicely in the set with a match high of 5.0 blocks. Old Dominion took the set late 25-22.
Smith continued to roll in the fourth set with five kills on eight attempts. The Blue Raiders had a late 22-20 lead, but the Monarchs bounced back and won the set 26-24.
