CLEMSON, S.C. – Graduate Stepan Holis secured a top-25 singles win and freshman John Chin also notched an impressive singles victory to highlight the Blue Raiders second day of competition in the Clemson Hidden Duals at Duckworth Family Tennis Facility on Saturday.
The Blue Raiders competed against the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday during the Clemson Hidden Duals. Holis teamed up with Elijah Poritzky to pick up a dominant doubles win, defeating Georgia's Paulsell and Debru, 6-1. Lucas Olivier and Chin battled to the end against Johnston and Perez Pena of Georgia but fell just short 6-7 against the Bulldog duo. Oskar Brostrom Poulsen and Mattia Bernardi rounded out the doubles for the Blue Raiders, falling against Georgia's Croyder, who is half of Georgia's No. 23-ranked doubles team, and Grevelius, 0-6.
In singles, Holis picked up a huge top-25 win over Georgia's No. 23 Hamish Stewart, marking Holis' second win of the day over the Bulldogs. Holis took the opening set, before dropping the second, but rebounded to secure the third in impressive fashion for the huge three-set victory, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. Chin garnered the Blue Raiders third win of the day defeating Mathis Debru in a three-set battle. Chin picked up the first set, before dropping the second in a close battle, but claimed the win after outpowering the Bulldog in the third, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. Brostrom Poulsen fell in a battle against the No. 122-ranked Blake Croyder, 4-6, 2-6. Olivier dropped a two-set affair against Georgia's Thomas Paulsell, 3-6, 0-6. Bernardi rounded out the Blue Raiders competitors for the day, falling in a two-set match against Britton Johnston of Georgia, 3-6, 4-6.
Middle Tennessee will close out the Clemson Hidden Duals tomorrow as they take on the Clemson Tigers with a noon first serve.
ASSISTANT COACH ANDREA CALIGIANA
"The guys did a better job today. Yesterday, I gave them a couple things that I wanted them to focus on for the rest of this event. Today, they did what I asked of them and that was the most important thing for me. Consequently, their play today was much improved too. I was pleased with the way our group of newcomers competed against such a strong and deep NCAA top-10 Georgia team. Shoutout to Stepan, who is playing great tennis and defeated a top college tennis player. His reaction after a tough second set was incredible, great example for the four freshmen here in Clemson. I was really happy for John Chin too. Not only was he able to win his match, but he competed so well. He definitely didn't look like a freshman. Looking forward to our matches tomorrow against Clemson. The Tigers are another extremely strong team and great host. Another great opportunity for our guys!"
