MOBILE, Ala. — After battling for 17 innings and going 1-1 on the first day of the South Alabama Classic, Middle Tennessee (2-5) was shut out as the Blue Raiders took on Northwestern State and South Alabama in a pair of pitchers' duels on Saturday.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 0, NORTHWESTERN STATE 2
» Both teams moved runners into scoring position in the first two innings, but the game stayed scoreless after two frames.
» Northwestern State got on the board first with a two-out, two-run homer over the left field wall in the bottom of the third.
» The Demons threatened to score again in the fourth inning, as they led off with a double and a walk, but Corrina Dodd entered in relief and kept NSU from adding to its lead.
» NSU once again had two runners in scoring position and was looking to extend its lead in the bottom of the sixth, but the Demons went scoreless in the sixth.
» The bottom of the MT order was unable to keep the game going, so Northwestern State finished off its 2-0 shutout of the Blue Raiders.
» Summer Burgess stole a base in the top of the first, her first of the season. That's now 39 career stolen bases, one shy of tying Steffi Silva (1999-2002) for ninth-most all-time.
» Just as Burgess did in an inning prior, Amaya Harris singled and swiped second base in the second frame. It was the first stolen base of Harris's young career.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 0, SOUTH ALABAMA 2
» MT and South Alabama went through two quick innings without a hit, but the Jaguars got on the board first with a two-out single that drove in two.
» After the Jaguars broke the ice with two runs in the third, both teams got only one base hit apiece.
» Kelci Hill singled up the middle with two outs in the fourth, and South Alabama's only hit after the third inning was a leadoff double in the sixth.
» Shelby Sargent made her first career start in MT's second game of the day. The Murfreesboro native started in left field and batted ninth for her new team.
