Baseball Season Preview: Options Abundant on the Mound

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Maybe the first and most important goal Jim Toman had when he took over Middle Tennessee's baseball program in 2018 was improving the pitching staff.
The Blue Raiders were one of the worst pitching teams in the country for a couple of seasons before Toman's arrival. However, thanks to an influx of talent from one of MT's biggest recruiting classes ever, they started to turn things around in 2019 and looked much better before COVID-19 ended the 2020 season midway through.
As the 2021 baseball season approaches, Toman is excited for the options he has on the rubber. Almost everyone is back from 2020's squad that finished with a 4.87 ERA, and there are both veterans and newcomers fighting for innings. It's a good problem to have.
"We have a really talented squad," Toman said. "We're just looking forward to hopefully playing a full season when the COVID-19 vaccines go out and we can get COVID to slow down."
Throwing strikes is maybe the biggest key to MT's improvement on the bump the last two seasons. No one was better for the Blue Raiders at that in 2020 than left-handed starter Peyton Wigginton, a junior who had a 24-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in four starts to go with a 3.58 ERA.
Wigginton leads the returning staff, along with Aaron Brown and Justin Medlin, who started four games apiece last season, and three-game starter Zach Keenan.
In the bullpen, Toman has an abundance of arms to turn to, both right-handed and southpaw. Five of his top six innings-getters are back from the 2020 bullpen, and they're joined by seven newcomers, including six freshmen and a transfer from Charleston Southern, Trent Seibert.
"It will be the guys who compete the most and throw the most strikes who will toss the most innings," Toman said. "We brought in a few and got almost everyone back. We have guys who have pitched a lot of innings who we know will compete, have good composure and throw strikes."
The pitching staff will also have some veterans behind the plate to throw to.
There are three newcomers — two freshman and a graduate transfer — at catcher, but most of the innings will likely go to juniors Mason Speirs and Jake Hagenow. Speirs started nine games a season ago to Hagenow's eight, batting .290 and ending with a .974 fielding percentage.
"We have some guys who've played a lot of innings behind the plate," Toman said. "Right now, I think Mason Speirs is probably the leader to be back there starting off."
