MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Blue Raider's women's soccer team took the pitch on Friday night for their third Conference USA match of the season, this time taking on the 49ers of Charlotte. After a long, wet, physical 90 minutes Middle Tennessee fell 1-0 after giving up a goal with less than two minutes to play.
The Blue Raiders had numerous chances throughout the match to put one in the back of the net, but were just unable to finish. One of those chances came early on in the match, when freshman midfielder Eleanor Gough did her best to finish off a corner but struck the inside of the post and saw the ball rebound straight to the Charlotte goalkeeper.
Coming into the second half tied at 0-0, the match was still up for grabs and Middle Tennessee pushed hard to grab a goal early in the half. The first 20 minutes of half number two was heavily controlled by the Lady Raiders. Freshman forward Taylor Hamlett had a nice shot from the top of the box just ten minutes into the half, but it was pushed out of harm's way by the goalie.
Arguably the best chance of the game for Middle Tennessee came from the senior Sam DeBien in the 67th minute. DeBien put on a masterclass step-over to shake her defender and give her the space to rip a shot that would rattle the crossbar.
The missed opportunities came back to bite the Blue Raiders late in the game. Charlotte midfielder Michaella Arteta crossed the ball into box, and after a few moments of chaos, it found the foot of Piper Biziorek and was sent into the back of the net.
Middle Tennessee now sits at 1-2 in Conference USA play, and will take on their next conference opponent in two weeks, when they travel to Florida International.
The Lady Raiders will be back at Dean A. Hayes Stadium on Sunday, March 21 to take on the Ole Miss Rebels. Kickoff is at 6:00 p.m.
