MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — One day after Conference USA named Corrina Dodd its Pitcher of the Week, the Middle Tennessee right-hander collected a second weekly honor as the Tennessee Sports Writers Association named Dodd its Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday.
"Corrina has matured quite a bit as a pitcher this season," MT head coach Jeff Breeden said. "She's preparing throughout the week to be ready for the weekend, and it shows. We feel good every time we send her to the circle, and we believe she'll give us all she has every time out."
Dodd's 14.0 innings with just one earned run allowed lowered her season ERA to a C-USA best 0.79. The Trafford, Alabama product is now 4-0 on the season with a pair of complete game shutouts, including Sunday's 1-0 victory over Mercer.
Nationally, her 0.79 ERA is ninth-best among pitchers with at least 44.0 innings pitched.
"I've had some great plays behind me this season from all over the field," Dodd said regarding her teammates' help behind her this season. "It's been a lot easier to dial in and pitch and let my defense work."
Dodd's breakout junior season in the circle comes after a battle with injuries in the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season. Despite finishing as the only Blue Raider with an undefeated record in the circle (3-0) last season, Dodd posted a 4.44 ERA in just 17.1 innings pitched.
After an extended offseason full of recuperation and preparation, Dodd is certainly at the top of her game so far in 2021.
"This past offseason we focused on a few different things that I believe are paying off. We only focused on the pitches that I felt were my best, and we also worked a lot with counts and situational pitching," she said.
"More than anything else, I pitched live to my team countless times. It's a battle at practice to get them out, especially after they've seen you 100 times and know what's coming. This has been the most revealing thing to see what needs work."
Tuesday's award is the third TSWA Pitcher of the Week award in program history and first since Cori Jennings in April 2018.
Dodd and the Blue Raiders stay home this week to take on Jacksonville State at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
