BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee baseball team pulled out the series split at UAB with a, 3-1, win in the series finale on Sunday. The Blue Raiders (13-10, C-USA 2-2) were led by starting pitcher Trent Seibert who earned his first win of his Blue Raider career and kept the Blazers (9-13, C-USA 2-2) scoreless through 6.2 innings.
Seibert pitched 6.2 innings, allowed five hits, struck out four, and walked one on the way to his first win in four starts this season.
Junior Fausto Lopez got the offense rolling for the Raiders with a leadoff double to set the table for the meat of the MT order. Cleanup hitter Brett Coker brought Lopez around to score with a double to left center to give MT an early 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh inning when the Raiders extended their lead on an RBI double off the bat of JT Mabry, scoring Nathan Sander from second.
Mabry's double today was his third on the weekend. The sophomore had a pair of doubles and two RBI in Saturday's 8-5 loss.
The scoring in the seventh continued on a fielder's choice from Cole Escher that was enough to score Lopez from third and stretch the MT lead to 3-0.
UAB got a run back in the bottom half of the seventh on a Blue Raider wild pitch and a pair of singles, cutting the Blazer deficit to 3-1.
After allowing two hits and a run in the seventh Seibert handed pitching duties over to senior David Zoz. Zoz pitched the final 2.1 innings, didn't allow a hit or a walk, and struck out one on the way to his fourth save of the season.
The Blue Raiders will return to Reese Smith Jr. Field on Thursday, April 1 for a four-game weekend series against Rice. This will be the first time MT has played at home since March 14 vs. Valparaiso. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
