NORFOLK, Va. – Peyton DePriest came into the day as the active leader in the country in goals scored and she added to that lead as she scored her 44th career goal to give the Blue Raiders a 1-0 victory over Old Dominion for their first win of the season.
With the win, MTSU now sits at 1-1 on the season while the Monarchs fall to 1-4-1 overall and 0-2 in Conference USA. Tonight also marked the first time in program history that the Blue Raiders have defeated Old Dominion in five attempts.
The defense was strong on both sides of the pitch as just seven shots combined were on target with each goalkeeper making three saves. The Monarchs had four corners to the Raiders' two but were hurt on offense by being called for offsides seven times.
After a relatively quiet first half with just three shots on goal, DePriest quickly gave the Blue Raiders the lead in the second half. In the 47th minute, she dribbled into the box and found the low left corner of the net to sneak the ball past the keeper.
She nearly doubled MTSU's lead just 30 seconds later, but her shot was wide left.
In the 51st minute, the Monarchs had one of their best chances of the night, but it was not to be as Morgan Watts hit the post.
After a couple more shots were off target by ODU, they had one last chance with a corner in the 89th minute but were unable to find the equalizer, allowing the Raiders to hold on for victory.
Middle Tennessee will return home next week when they host Charlotte at 7 p.m. at Dean A. Hayes Stadium.
