BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Middle Tennessee baseball team split Saturday's Conference USA doubleheader with rival WKU.
In the first game of the day, the Blue Raiders' (18-15-1, C-USA 7-7-1) starting pitcher Peyton Wigginton threw 6.1 innings before allowing a Hilltopper (17-18, C-USA 7-8) hit. Wigginton joins MT teammate Aaron Brown who also threw a two hitter earlier this month.
With Wigginton's outing today, it marks the first time since March of 2001 that Blue Raider teammates have thrown two-hitters in the same month. Brown allowed two hits in his 4-1 complete game victory vs. Rice on April 1.
After the shutout in game one, the WKU offense came alive and struck for five runs including two solo home runs and forced the split, 5-4.
GAME 1: MT 3, WKU 0
The Blue Raiders took game-one of today's twin ticket, 3-0, on the back of starting pitcher Peyton Wigginton. The left-hander tossed 6.1 innings before surrendering a hit to the Hilltoppers.
"Wigginton was awesome," said Toman. ""[Wigginton] has competed all year for us and this was one of his better games. We were all pulling for him to get the no-hitter."
The Franklin native pitched all seven innings for the Blue Raiders, allowed just two hits, walked a pair, and struck out six on the way to his third win of the season.
Sophomore Brett Coker provided the offense for the Blue Raiders in the first game, driving in all three of MT's runs.
Coker got the Raider offense rolling early and belted a two-run home run in the top of the first inning scoring Fausto Lopez from second.
"He's been swinging it better and that's how we've expected him to hit," said Toman.
After a pair of singles from Lopez and JT Mabry in the top of the third, Coker drove in his third RBI of the game on a single through the left side that scored Lopez from second.
Cocker finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and a home run.
GAME 2: WKU 5, MT 4
In the second game the Blue Raider offense once again jumped out to an early lead in the on a RBI single off the bat of Jacob Williams.
After being shutout in game one of the doubleheader, the Hilltopper bats came alive and WKU took a 2-1 lead after two solo home runs.
The Hilltoppers added three more on one hit, three walks, a hit-by-pitch, and a Blue Raider error.
"[WKU] had the bases loaded with no outs and they hadn't gotten a hit in the inning to that point," said Toman. "It's difficult to get out of an inning if you give a team four or five outs."
MT mounted a comeback in the final two innings by scoring three runs including a solo home run down the left field line by JT Mabry in the top of the sixth.
However, the Raider effort fell flat and WKU ended the game, 5-4.
"We have [Zach] Keenan pitching tomorrow and he's a very good pitcher," said Toman. "We've been swinging the bat pretty well and we have a good pitcher throwing tomorrow, so I like our chances."
The series finale between the Blue Raiders and Hilltoppers will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Nick Denes Field in Bowling Green, Ky.
