MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — With the regular season in the rear view, eight Conference USA softball teams will meet in Bowling Green, Kentucky next week for the C-USA Championship, which will begin Wednesday with a matchup between Middle Tennessee and UTSA.
The Blue Raiders are the five-seed in this year's tournament after finishing the regular season with an overall record of 26-21 and an 11-8 mark in league play. They'll play the eight-seed Roadrunners, who finished at 14-30, 8-12 against C-USA teams. First pitch is slated for Wednesday at 12 p.m. CT on Western Kentucky's campus.
Due to COVID-19, Conference USA determined in the preseason that its teams would play only against their division in the regular season. Joining MT in Bowling Green from the east division will be three-seed Charlotte, four-seed WKU and seven-seed Marshall. UTSA will be joined by three other west division teams: one-seed North Texas, two-seed UAB and six-seed Louisiana Tech.
This season marks the third consecutive C-USA tournament the Blue Raiders have made. MT previously won the league championship in 2018 after making it in as a six-seed.
UTSA leads the all-time series over MT, 6-3. The two programs last faced off in San Antonio in 2019 with MT winning one of three. Lexi Cushing broke the program's career home run record in that road trip against the Roadrunners.
Should Middle Tennessee advance past the first round, the Blue Raiders will take on host team Western Kentucky at 5 p.m. CT Wednesday in another single-elimination game. MT won the season series over the Hilltoppers at home, 3-1, on April 16-18. A quarterfinal game against top-seeded North Texas awaits Thursday afternoon.
Once play begins on Thursday, the four teams remaining will play out a double-elimination tournament. Semifinals will be played on Friday, and the championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network. All games leading up to the championship will be broadcast on ESPN+.
