9/24/2021 10:39:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Blue Raiders kicked off conference play at home tonight against the Charlotte 49ers with a 3-1 win. This is the first win over Charlotte for Middle Tennessee's volleyball team since 2017.
The Blue Raiders dropped set one 25-17 and looked to be the team that showed up to UT Martin earlier in the week. After set one, Middle Tennessee came out guns blazing taking the last three sets in a winning fashion. Four Blue Raiders finished with 10 or more kills, including Samira Lawson Body who led the team with 17 kills and was 2 away from her career-high she set earlier this season. Marley Banton was getting after it on the defense tonight with a career-high 27 digs, and her four service aces tonight put her at 70 in her career and fourth all-time in the 25-point rally scoring era.
Middle Tennessee vs. Charlotte Set-by-Set
Set one looked similar to the Blue Raider's appearance on Tuesday at UT Martin. Middle Tennessee's seven errors and .176 attack percentage compared to Charlotte's one error and .480 attack percentage saw the first set be easily decided. Lawson Body tried to keep the Blue Raiders in the set with six kills, but the team's errors were too much.
The Blue Raiders had a match-high .359 attack percentage in set two, which saw them take their first set of the day 25-21. Lawson Body had another six kills in set two, which combined with Dasia Smith's four kills, made for an efficient and very effective offense.
Lawson Body and Temiz's struggles in set three were covered up by Smith and Kayla Henley's efficient 10 combined kills. Banton's 11 digs and serving ace in the set showed up big on the court during Lawson Body's struggles. Middle Tennessee took the set 25-19.
The Blue Raiders took the last set 25-23 and finished the night with a game-winning Lawson Body kill. Michaela Wright had an efficient set with four kills on seven attacks.
Stat leaders:
