Blue Raiders fall in Chattanooga

Lee, Zani, and Lilly-Sophie Win in Singles
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women's tennis (1-4) drops a close one at Chattanooga (2-0) on Sunday, Jan. 23 inside the Strang-Voges Tennis Center, 4-3.
Chattanooga got off to a hot start on the doubles front against the Blue Raiders. In the doubles match, the Mocs were leading on all three courts around halfway through the set. Freshman Eloise Swarbrick and Sophomore Lilly-Sophie Schmidt were the first to finish, dropping their set 3-6 on court three. Senior Lee Barnard and Junior Noelle Mauro finished second and claimed their set in comeback fashion 6-4.
The doubles point came down to court one, Senior Zani Barnard and Junior Love-Star Alexis dropped a close 6-7 decision to give UTC the advantage heading into singles play.
In singles, Chattanooga took four out of six first sets, the Barnard twins were the only two individuals to take a first singles set from the Mocs. Jessie Young of Chattanooga was able to defeat Alexis in two sets 6-1, 6-2 finishing first. L. Barnard gained the first point on the day for MT with a swift 6-3, 6-0 decision. Mauro fell in two sets 2-6, 1-6 putting the advantage at 3-1 UTC.
To shorten the score gap, Z. Barnard finished fourth on court four, defeating her UTC opponent in a two-set triumph 6-4, 6-2 giving MT its second point. However, minutes later Muskan Gupta fell on court three in two tight sets 6-4, 6-3 giving UTC the four-point threshold needed to secure the win.
After coaches decided to play through on court six, Schmidt claimed the second singles win on the day for the Blue Raiders in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Middle Tennessee returns home and will prepare for the first home game of the season on Jan. 28 at 2:00 p.m. against East Tennessee State. The match will be held inside the Adams Tennis Complex and admission is free throughout the season.
