Middle Tennessee Falls 3-1 to Rice in Final Home Match of the Season
10/26/2022 9:33:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Rice scored three unanswered goals to claim the victory
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — It's no secret that the Middle Tennessee Blue Raider soccer squad is one of the youngest teams in Conference USA. Throughout the year, a pair of freshmen that have stood out are Manon Lebargy and Emma Pettersen. That pair got MTSU off to a fast start as Lebargy assisted on Pettersen's 9' strike to give the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead over the Rice Owls, but after a late first-half penalty kick from Rice's Mariana Elizondo tied it, a pair of second half goals from Rice were enough to ice it and give the Owls a 3-1 win.
The Blue Raiders spent a majority of the game's first 10 minutes in the Rice end, culminating with Pettersen's team-high fourth goal (a mark shared with Kirstine Lykke) of the season that came on a good look from deep in the Owl box.
Hannah Suder collected three saves on the night, but was unable to stop a shot that came over the backline on a set piece by Rice's Serena Pham and also a breakaway goal in the 35' of the second half by Rice graduate student Grace Collins, which proved to be the goal that put the game away for the Owls.
By the Numbers
14- The number of combined points this season by freshman Lebargy and Pettersen following tonight's assist for Lebargy and goal scored by Pettersen. For Lebargy, it was her second assist of the year.
3- Players that have both played and started in every match this season. The list includes defenders Caroline Manley and Lauren Spaanstra as well as Suder. Additionally, Manley has played each minute of the 2022 campaign.
