Women’s tennis completes day one at the June Stewart Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee competed in day one of the June Stewart Invitational hosted by Vanderbilt on Friday.
The first singles session of the day featured two of the freshmen, Cara Szilasi and Karen Yibirin. They both faced Purdue respectively with the Boilermakers taking the win in both matches.
The doubles team for MTSU was Love-Star Alexis and Rutuja Chaphalkar. The duo played Vanderbilt in the only doubles match for the Blue Raiders. The Commodores ended the 2021-22 season ranked No. 26 by the ITA. Vanderbilt won the match.
In the second session of singles, the Blue Raider played Missouri in three single matches.
Alexis came up short in a match that consisted of tiebreakers. The senior from Canada was down 2-5 in the first set before winning four straight games to take a 6-5 lead. The first set would end up in tiebreak in favor of Alexis 7-6 (2). The Tigers won the second set tiebreaker as well as the 10-point tiebreaker in the third.
Noelle Mauro's singles match was competitive as well. Missouri took the first set. Mauro fought back to win the second set 7-6 (3) before losing the third set 10-point tiebreaker.

"Love-Star and Noelle's matches were competitive as expected. We played a solid, doubles match as the score does not indicate how close it really was. We know we can challenge these solid teams. We are working on winning the close matches, and we will continue to attack our mental toughness challenges throughout the semester."
