Middle Tennessee tops Virginia Tech Friday Night

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennnessee men's tennis (8-3, 1-0) defeats Virginia Tech (4-5) in dominant fashion 6-1, Friday night inside the Adams Tennis Complex.
With the win, the Blue Raiders move to 8-3 and earned their second power 5 win on the season. Middle Tennessee moves to 2-2 (.500) against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents.
In doubles, the powerful Graduate Student duo of Chris Edge and Stepan Holis shook down their opponent 6-4 on court No. 3. Minutes later, Senior Francisco Rocha and Freshman Oskar Brostrom Poulsen defeated the No. 17 doubles pairing in the country Jordan Chyrsostom and Ryan Fishback 6-4 to give MT the doubles point. The Blue Raiders have now won 10 of 11 doubles points this season.
To kick off singles action, the Blue Raiders won five out of six first sets over the Hokies, setting the tone for the remaining set. No. 61 Stijn Slump finished first in two sets 6-2, 6-3 over No. 70 Fishback. A few moments later, Edge pushed the MT lead to three with a two set 6-3, 6-4 finisher on court No. 3.
Rocha clinched the match at 4-0 on court No. 2, easily winning in two sets 6-2, 6-3 over Carlo Donato.
Coaches elected to finish out the remaining court Nos. 4, 5, 6. Holis dropped a three-set heartbreaking defeat 6-2, 4-6, 2-6 to give Virginia Tech their only point on the night. Motl won his match 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6). Freshman John Chin picked up his fifth-straight singles win in three close sets 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) on court No. 6 to wrap up the evening at 6-1.

The Blue Raiders will hit the road tomorrow morning to face Indiana in Bloomington on Sunday, Feb. 13 at noon CT. This match will be the sixth match against a power 5 program through 12 matches. Six of the last eight MT matches have been against P5 programs.
