SAN DIEGO – Middle Tennessee Softball fell in a pair of contests 3-1 against the Stanford Cardinal and the San Diego State Aztecs to open the SDSU Season Kickoff at SDSU Softball Stadium.
"Number one we had more energy and electricity than both of our opponents today," expressed head coach Jeff Breeden. "We preach that every day, and I am pleased with the way all of our players competed today in both games."
"Kerri Munn was awesome in her first career outing especially against a PAC-12 team like Stanford. She handled them well," said Breeden. "We also made some great defensive plays in both games. Kelci Hill was all over the place in the outfield, and Lani made a great over-the-shoulder play in the outfield, and the relay from Shelby to Richetto to Hutch for the tag-out at home was amazing! What a great play!"
"Both Amaya and Kelci had good at-bats today," expressed Breeden. "We need for them to really hook up together in the one and two spots to make us go. Shoulders also had some good at-bats and came up huge scoring a run for us."
Middle Tennessee 1 vs. Stanford 3
It was a battle during the first game of the SDSU Season Kickoff. The Cardinal struck early, after knocking a triple to right center, the Cardinal took a 1-0 lead on an RBI-single to center field.
The Blue Raiders looked to answer in the third. Freshman Abby Shoulders drew a leadoff walk and then stole second to get the Blue Raiders in scoring position. Shoulders advanced to third off a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Amaya Harris, and then junior Kelci Hill cleaned things up as she knocked a single to left center to bring Shoulders home and bring the game even at one.
The Cardinal led in hits 4-1 from the third through the seventh, but the Blue Raiders were able to keep the Cardinal contained as the game remained locked at 1-1 heading into extra innings.
A Cardinal was placed on second due to extra-innings rules. The first Cardinal up to the plate connected on the first pitch she saw to send it over the fence in left field to give Stanford the 3-1 win.
Hill went 1-for-4 with the Blue Raiders sole RBI of the contest, while Harris also tallied a hit for the Blue and White going 1-for-3 in the contest.
Freshman Keri Munn got the start on the mound, pitching seven innings. Munn allowed 10 hits, three runs, and struck out a pair of batters. Freshman Claire Woods came in-relief of Munn for the final inning of the contest, allowing a run and walking a batter.

Senior Mia Marinakis pinch hit for freshman Shelby Sargent and connected on a single to center field to advance Rodriguez to second. Senior Savannah Freeman took second to pinch run for Rodriguez, before Harris hit a two-out single down the left-field line to bring across Freeman and bring the Blue Raiders back within one.
The Aztecs opened the fifth with a leadoff single. SDSU moved their runner to second on a sacrifice bunt, before a two-out single would push the Aztecs lead back to two with two innings to play.
