SAN DIEGO – Middle Tennessee Softball continued play in the SDSU Season Kickoff, splitting a doubleheader against Boise State and Cal Poly on Saturday.
Middle Tennessee 1 vs. Boise State 8
Boise State got on the board first, scoring a two-run home run over the right field wall and taking an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
The Broncos extended their lead to three off an RBI double into left field.
Boise State continued to add to their lead in the fifth as they hit a solo homer over the left field wall to take a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Mealer looked to spark the Blue Raider offense, knocking a solo homer over the right-center wall, and bringing Middle Tennessee back within three, 4-1.
However, the Broncos hot hand struck once more in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases on a double, single, and an HBP, before the Broncos connected on a grand slam over the right center wall to bring the game to its final, 8-1.
Freshman Laura Mealer led the Blue Raiders in the contest, going 1-for-1 on her home run and recording an RBI and a run, while also drawing a pair of walks in her two other at-bats. Sophomore Amaya Harris also played well in the contest, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore Makenzie Hutchinson and junior Kelci Hill both went 1-for-4, recording the Blue Raiders other two hits in the contest.
Freshman Keri Munn got the start in the circle for the Blue Raiders. Munn put in 6.1 innings of work, recording a season-high five strikeouts, allowing six runs on eight hits, and walking two batters. Mia Marinakis came in relief, pitching two-thirds of an inning and allowing two runs on two hits.
Middle Tennessee 4 vs. Cal Poly 3
The Blue Raiders came out hot and quick to start their second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Hill got things started in the first, hitting a one-out infield single. Shoulders followed right behind Hill in the three-spot, connecting on a one-out single through the left side to get two Blue Raiders aboard and move Hill into scoring position. Mealer kept the Blue Raiders in the inning as she hit a two-out single up the middle, plating Hill for the Blue Raiders first RBI of the contest and moving Shoulders to second. Shoulders stole third right before Czajkowski hit a two-out single through the left side to bring Shoulders home and move Mealer onto second. After a Mustang pitching change, Rodriguez took the plate and connected on a two-out single into shallow center field to bring Mealer home and push the Blue Raiders early lead to 3-0.
Middle Tennessee held onto its 3-0 lead through the two and a half innings before the Mustangs drew a HBP and connected on back-to-back singles to push two runs across and cut into the Blue Raiders lead, 3-2.
However, it didn't take long for the Blue Raiders to respond as Richetto hit a leadoff infield single to open the fourth. Freeman came into the game to run for Richetto and stole second to get into scoring position. The top of the order came around and Harris knocked a one-out single into center field to bring around Freeman and push the Blue Raiders lead back to two, 4-2.
Cal Poly got one back in the bottom of the frame as the Mustangs hit a leadoff solo home run to bring the game back within one, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Raiders would eventually hold for the final three innings of play and secure the team's first win of the 2022 campaign.
Nearly the entire Blue Raider lineup recorded a hit in the contest. Junior Hill and freshmen Claire Czajkowski and Mealer, each recorded a pair of hits going 2-for-4. Czajkowski and Mealer each recorded an RBI, while Hill and Mealer both tallied a run. Senior Lani Rodriguez went 1-for-4 and recorded an RBI, while sophomore Harris went 1-for-3 and registered the Blue Raiders fourth RBI in the contest.
Corrina Dodd played a complete game, going all seven innings and recording a season-high six strikeouts. Dodd also allowed three runs on five hits.
