Team in second, Jegers tied for first through 18 holes
GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Middle Tennessee finished the first round of the Loyola Intercollegiate in second place Sunday after recording a score of 277 (-11). Kevin Jegers ended the day in a three-way tie for first at 66 (-6).
"I am happy with our start," head coach Mark McEntire said. "Great round from Kevin and solid rounds from Owen, Mike and Gavin. We need to play the par 3 holes better tomorrow and continue our good play on the par 5 holes."
Middle Tennessee was 13-under on par 5 holes and a field-leading 4-under on par 4 holes. However, par 3 holes gave them fits to the tune of 11-over.
Jegers picked up two eagles and five birdies to record his fourth straight round under 70 to start the spring portion of the season. His two eagles were the most by an individual Sunday.
Joining Jegers in the top 10 was Michael Barnard, who carded a 69 (-3) to end the day in a tie for ninth. That effort was his eighth par-or-better round of the season, as he picked up four birdies in the round.
Owen Stamper ended the day tied for 15th at 70 (-2). The Scottsville, Ky., native used six birdies for his third straight round under par.
Rounding out the Blue Raider lineup were Nick Wolf, who tied for 34that 72 (E), and Jack Heath, who finished play in a tie for 92nd at 77 (+5).
Gavin Clements ended the day tied for 15th at 70 (-2) while playing as an individual. Also playing as individuals, Connor Daly tied for 65th at 74 (+2), and Mattias Varjun tied for 86th at 76 (+4).
Sunday's round was MT's fifth straight under 280 going back to the Trinity Forest Invitational in October.
The second round begins with a shotgun start at 8:45 CT Monday.
