Blue Raiders set to face Murray State and Mercer at Mercer Invitational

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Softball (2-9) heads down to Georgia this week as the Blue Raiders participate in the Mercer Invitational at Sikes Field in Macon, Georgia.
The Blue Raiders open the weekend with a doubleheader on Friday, February 25 at 1 p.m. CT against Murray State (6-4), before taking on the host Mercer Bears (3-8) at 3 p.m. CT. The Blue Raiders will then close out the weekend on Saturday, playing the Racers at 10 a.m. CT, before playing Mercer in their finale at 2 p.m. CT.

Quick Hits
Friday marks the eighth all-time meeting between Middle Tennessee and the 10th all-time meeting between MT and Mercer. Murray State leads the all-time series against the Blue Raiders, holding a 4-3 advantage, but the two programs remain even 1-1 when playing at neutral sites. In their last meeting, the Blue Raiders earned a 10-inning 3-1 win over the Racers on March 30, 2021. Against the Bears, Mercer holds the all-time series lead over the Blue Raiders, 7-2, with Mercer taking the only game the two programs played in Macon, 2-1, however, the Blue Raiders took the last meeting against the Bears taking a 1-0 shutout on March 21, 2021, in Murfreesboro.
Scouting the Competition
Murray State is in its 10th year under head coach Kara Amundson, after having led the Racers to a 237-227 record over her decade-long career.
The Racers enter the weekend with a 6-4 overall record. Murray State opened the 2022 campaign at the DePaul Dome Tournament, in which they finished the weekend 2-3, before playing in the Blazer Classic, hosted by fellow C-USA member UAB. The Racers produced a 4-1 record at the Blazer Classic, defeating Toledo, 13-2 (5 inn.) and 7-1, as well as UAB, 9-0 and 8-4, but fell against North Dakota, 4-3.
Murray State is led by Logan Braundmeier, who leads the team in batting average (.500), slugging percentage (.906), at-bats (32), hits (16), RBI (11), runs (11), and stolen bases (7). Teammate Lindsey Carroll is second for the Racers in batting average (.406), hits (13), and runs (9), while teammate Racer Sierra Gilmore is second on the team in RBI (9).
Mercer is in its first season under head coach Lindsay Fico, having led the Bears to a 3-8 record during the 2022 campaign.
The Bears most recently played in the Jacksonville University/University of North Florida Invitational. Mercer picked up two wins against Jacksonville 12-1 and 10-3, but fell against University of North Florida, 5-2 and 4-2, and Michigan State, 2-1.
Mercer is led by Kylie Helm who leads the Bears in batting average (.407), hits (11), and RBI (8), while tying for third on the team in runs (5) and total bases (15). Diamond Williams and Annie Potter are second on the team with 10 hits apiece, while Williams has a .357 batting average and is second on the team with 7 RBIs so far this season.
Last Time Out: Easton Bama Bash
The Blue Raiders played their best competition of the season, taking on No. 2 Alabama, No. 8 Virginia Tech, and Evansville at the Easton Bama Bash. The Blue Raiders opened the weekend with a 4-2 win over the Evansville Purple Aces, before holding a 2-0 lead over No. 8 Virginia Tech, before the Hokies took the 3-2 victory. On day two, the Blue Raiders battled the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide, falling 8-0 after five innings, before playing Evansville into extra innings but falling 2-1 after the eighth. The Blue Raiders closed out play in the Easton Bama Bash on Sunday, taking on the Tide, but falling 9-1 through six innings.

- The 2022 season marks the 30th season of Blue Raider Softball, as well as the 10th season for head coach Jeff Breeden, who has amassed a 192-278 record over his decade-long career.
- Freshman Laura Mealer had a fantastic opening weekend for the Blue Raiders, batting a .333 and tallying two RBIs on five hits, including the Blue Raiders first home run of the season. She also scored three runs and drew three walks over the weekend.
- Freshman Claire Czajkowski Sophomore Amaya Harris holds the longest streaks for the Blue Raiders entering the Easton Bama Bash, carrying a six-game on-base streak and a three-game hitting streak into this weekend's competition.
- Senior Corrina Dodd and junior Kelci Hill were named to the C-USA All-Conference Team on Tuesday, February 8.
- The Blue Raiders were selected sixth in the C-USA Preseason Poll. Charlotte is the C-USA favorite to open the 2022 season, while North Texas was picked to finish second and WKU was picked third. UAB and Marshall were the other programs that slotted above the Blue Raiders, slotting in at fourth and fifth, respectively.
