Blue Raiders Can’t Fight off the Luck of the Irish, Bounce Back to Defeat Tennessee State

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee men's tennis (7-3) falls to Notre Dame (4-1) 5-2 in the first half of a double-header Sunday afternoon inside the ATC. Two hours later, the Blue Raiders bounce back and defeat region foe Tennessee State (0-4) 6-1 for the second time this season.
In the loss to the Fighting Irish, Middle Tennessee's longest active home win streak in the nation is snapped at 34. "The match with Notre Dame was a battle. The guys were down in the doubles and came back on both courts but we couldn't finish." Head Coach Jimmy Borendame said.
In doubles against ND, the ATC was electric watching the Blue Raiders fight on court Nos. 1 and 3, going into tiebreaker sets to decide each match. Freshman Oskar Brostrom Poulsen and Senior Francisco Rocha won easily on court No. 2 with a score of 6-2.
On court Nos. 1 and 3, both Blue Raider pairs were down 5-3 in their separate matches, both duos fought back to equalize their match at 6-6, forcing a tiebreak set. No. 44 Stijn Slump and Pavel Motl battled and pushed the set past the seven-point threshold, ultimately falling 11-9. To give ND the doubles point, Chris Edge and Stepan Holis fell 9-7 after a back-and-forth contest.
In singles, Notre Dame claimed four out of six first singles sets. No. 82 Rocha dominated on court No. 2 in two sets 6-2, 6-1 over Aditya Vashistha to equalize the score. No. 30 Slump fell in two sets to give the advantage back to Notre Dame.
No. 106 Holis dropped his match in two sets 6-1, 6-2, pushing the Irish lead to two. Chris Edge gained the second Blue Raider point, winning in two sets on court No. 3.
Despite the resilient Middle Tennessee effort, Notre Dame clinched the match in a three-set triumph over Motl on court No. 5.
Brostrom Poulsen was granted permission to finish out the remainder of his match on court No. 6, but similarly fell in three sets to give ND their fifth point.
"I am very proud of how we battled. They were a little better than us today. We will regroup and get ready for a tough Virginia Tech team on Friday." Coach Borendame said.
Against Tennessee State, the Blue Raiders won the doubles point in fashion, Freshman Mattia Bernardi was inserted into court No. 3 and won 6-3 paired with Rocha.
In singles, Freshman John Chin and Lucas Olivier made their first appearance since North Alabama on Jan. 21. Both players picked up wins on their courts, Chin moves to 4-0 on the season in singles and Olivier sits at 3-0 after his win as well.

Middle Tennessee will have a week off from competition to prepare to host Virginia Tech at home on Friday, Feb. 11 at 5:00 p.m. inside the ATC.
