Middle Tennessee Falls to Lipscomb in 2022 Home Opener

Trent Seibert throws 6.1 shutout innings in his first start of the season
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee baseball struggled to get the bats going on Tuesday afternoon, scratching only four hits in a 3-0 loss to Lipscomb in the team's home opener.
The Blue Raiders (3-6) got a great start on the bump from senior Trent Seibert, who tossed 6.1 shutout innings, but head coach Jim Toman said a lack of hustle on the basepaths, sloppy fielding and lack of ability to hold runners on gave the Bisons (4-3) an opening in the eighth inning, where they took the lead for good with an unearned run, their first of three runs scored inthe final two frames.
"We've got to play harder and we've got to play cleaner," Toman said. "We had a couple of times where we didn't hustle or run the ball out a couple times. But give them guys credit, they battled. It was a low scoring affair, but we didn't play hard enough and we didn't deserve to win."
The southpaw Seibert entered Tuesday's game with a 13.50 ERA after two tough outings to start the season, but was in command early, getting two of his six strikeouts in a 1-2-3 first inning. The senior finished the night only allowing three hits and walking zero batters.
"Being a starter, you have to figure out what the umpire is going to give you," Seibert said of his early success. "Tonight early on, he was giving me the fastball out to a righty. After the first couple innings, I told (catcher Mason Spiers) and Coach (Jerry) Meyers that if he's going to give it to us, then let's throw it."
Seibert also pinpointed his slider and particularly his change-up as two pitches that showed up for him tonight in a way they hadn't to this point this season.
"The change-up, we didn't really bring it out the first two outings but it wasn't good at all. I don't think I threw it for a strike," Seibert said. "Then tonight, Coach Meyers called a few sliders when I was in advantage counts and I shook to a change up and got two strikes immediately on that, so it felt good coming out of the hand today."
Brett Coker had three of MT's four hits, going 3-for-4 at the dish with three singles. Brian Dillingham also had a bunt single in his first start of the season for the Blue Raiders' only other hit.
Tuesday was the first time Middle Tennessee was shutout in their home opener since March 4, 1977, when the Blue Raiders lost to Indiana State 2-0.
"It was a good crowd," Toman said of the 1175 Blue Raiders in attendance. "I feel bad that we didn't score runs for the crowd on a great day. Great opener, the field's looking good, everything looks good except for we didn't play as well as we needed to."
MT is back in action tomorrow against Western Carolina in a neutral site game in Chattanooga, Tenn. at AT&T Field, home of the Chattanooga Lookouts. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. local time, 4 p.m. central.
