Middle Tennessee Softball splits final day of MTSU Invitational against Illinois State and Chattanooga

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Softball (11-14) split its final day of play in the MTSU Invitational as the Blue Raiders earned their second shutout of the season against Illinois State 3-0, and then finished the day falling 3-1 in their finale against the Chattanooga Mocs at Blue Raider Softball Field.

The Blue Raiders started the day off strong. Both sides recorded a pair of hits but remained locked in a scoreless battle through the first four innings of play.
In the fifth, sophomore Shelby Sargent connected on a one-out double into right field after a Blue Raider strikeout to get a runner in scoring position and looking to break the stalemate. Sophomore Amaya Harris then reached on a fielder's choice and after a double steal, the Blue Raiders had two runners in scoring position with only one down. Freshman Abby Shoulders drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases for the Blue Raiders. Freshman Laura Mealer then connected on a two-RBI double into center field, and then after advancing to third on the throw, the Redbird catcher overthrew the Illinois State third baseman and allowed Mealer to score on an error and give the Blue Raiders a 3-0 lead.
The Redbirds connected on another hit in the top of the sixth and the Blue Raiders would knock one more hit in the seventh, but Illinois State couldn't answer as the Blue Raiders secured their second shutout win of the season, 3-0.
Mealer led the Blue Raiders in the win, batting a perfect 3-for-3, knocking in two RBIs, and scoring a run. Sargent went 1-for-2 and scored a run in the contest, while freshman Anyce Harvey connected on the Blue Raiders other hit in the contest, finishing 1-for-3 in the win.
Freshman Claire Woods earned her first-ever career complete-game shutout against Illinois State, putting in seven full innings of work and allowing just four hits and fanning Redbirds in the win.
Middle Tennessee 1 vs. Chattanooga 3
Chattanooga got things started early. The Mocs opened the game with back-to-back singles, advanving the Mocs leadoff baserunner to third. Chattanooga stole second to put two baserunners on scoring position with no outs. The Mocs then connected on a one-out two-RBI single to give the Mocs a 2-0 lead in the first.
Chattanooga extended its lead in the fourth. The Mocs connected on a two-out single into left field to get abord. After stealing second, the Mocs then hit a two-out RBI-double into right center bring their third run of the game across and take the 3-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders struggled to find offense throughout the game, but they looked to answer in the seventh. Harvey led things off, reaching on an error by the Mocs' shortstop. Back-to-back Blue Raider singles from Harris and junior Kaylee Richetto loaded the bases for the Blue Raiders with no one out. Senior Lani Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly into center field to bring across Harvey, but Middle Tennessee couldn't take advantage of their other two baserunners as a strikeout and a popup would close the 3-1 ballgame.
Harris led the Blue Raiders against Chattanooga, batting 2-for-3 in the contest. Junior Kelci Hill and Richetto also tallied hits against the Mocs, going 1-for-3 and 1-for-2, respectively, while Rodriguez recorded the Blue Raiders' sole RBI in the contest.
Senior Gretchen Mead pitched a complete game, going seven innings and allowing three runs on nine hits and striking out five Mocs in the loss.

The Blue Raiders continue their nine-game homestand next week as they host the Austin Peay Govs for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, March 16 for a 5 p.m. first pitch at Blue Raider Softball Field.
