STATESBORO, Ga. - Middle Tennessee ended the first round of the Schenkel Invitational at 288 (E) Friday at Forest Heights Country Club. The Blue Raiders are tied for 10th but just five strokes out of a tie for second place heading into the second day of play. One of the last teams to tee off Friday, MT fell from a tie for fifth after some late-round rain came through.
"We had it in a really good spot, and then we ran into some weather," head coach Mark McEntire said. "We had a tough finish and finished with even par. This is a very good field, and we need to make a move tomorrow on moving day."
In a field featuring four teams in Golfstat's top 50, the Blue Raiders ended the first round tied with No. 39 UAB and No. 47 Florida Gulf Coast.
Owen Stamper and Nick Wolf wrapped up the round in a tie for 11th at 70 (-2). Each carded four birdies on the round.
Kevin Jegers birdied six of his first twelve holes, and at one point was tied for first at 5-under, before going over par on four of his final five holes to end up at 72 (E) in a tie for 28th place.
Michael Barnard finished in a tie for 66th at 76 (+4), and Connor Daly rounded out the lineup in a tie for 75th at 77 (+5).
Host Georgia Southern holds the team lead at 273 (-15). Wolf and Stamper are four strokes off the individual lead.
Jegers' six birdies are tied for third-most among the 87-player field.
Saturday's second round begins with tee times between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. CT.
