Blue Raiders Win Pitchers' Duel vs. UAB
3/25/2022 10:07:00 PM | Baseball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coming into the weekend, Peyton Wigginton and Zach Keenan occupied the ninth and 10th spots, respectively, on Middle Tennessee's career strikeout list. The senior duo proved why they are two of the best to ever wear a Middle Tennessee uniform in Friday night's 1-0 shutout of UAB.
Keenan, a part of his second shutout of the season (complete-game shutout vs. Ball State Feb. 26), threw seven dominate innings, tied a career high in strikeouts with 11 and held UAB to just two hits. Keenan, a right-hander from Suwanee, Ga., set down 13 of 14 batters from the third inning to the seventh, including nine straight retired.
Wigginton, whose last four outings have been in relief, came in to shut the door in the final two innings for his first career save. Wigginton struck out three Blazers to pass eighth-place holder Chris Crabtree on the program's career strikeout list with 221.
Brett Coker hit a leadoff single in the third, stole second with his team-leading seventh stolen base of 2022, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the lone run of the game on an RBI groundout by Jacob Williams.
Each starter struck out the side in the first inning and set down the first six batters faced. The two staffs combined for 23 strikeouts and seven hits allowed.
JT Mabry's hit streak reached 10 games on a seventh inning single. Mason Speirs extended his on-base streak to eight with a single in the fourth.
The Blue Raiders (9-12, 2-2) have now won back-to-back conference games and cooled off UAB (14-6, 2-2), who saw its three-game winning streak end.
