Middle Tennessee shuts out Lipscomb 7-0 in midweek tilt
4/12/2022 9:34:00 PM | Baseball
NASHVILLE, Tenn..—Middle Tennessee (16-15, 7-5 C-USA) showed up to Ken Dugan Field on Tuesday night in search of a complete team win. A complete team win is exactly what the Blue Raiders got, collecting a total of eight hits and 10 strikeouts on the mound en route to a 7-0 shutout over host Lipscomb (18-14, 7-5 ASUN) to put them a game over .500 on the season.
"We had a lot of new guys in the lineup step up and Jack Julian threw five shutout innings on his 21st birthday," said Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim Toman. "KB (Peralta) had two hits, (Gabe) Jennings had two hits and made some good defensive plays. It was a pretty solid game all the way around and I'm happy for the guys that got a chance to get in there. It was a good team win."
Blue Raider left fielder Jackson Galloway swatted a towering home run to left field on the first pitch of the second inning to give MTSU a 1-0 lead. For Galloway, it was his fourth home run of the year that came on a fastball that Lipscomb starter Kaleb Kantola tried to groove by him.
"In the first inning, (Kantola) was all off-speed and I told myself eventually he's going to have to throw a fastball," Galloway said. "Coach (Getzelman) told me to sit fastball and I got one somewhere that I liked and put a good swing on it."
Galloway ended the night 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and made a great diving catch in left to strand a runner in scoring position to end a Lipscomb threat in the third inning.
Two at-bats after Galloway's home run, third baseman Jennings made his first hit of the year a memorable one, as he hit a home run to almost the same spot as Galloway's to give the Blue Raiders a 2-0 advantage.
Middle Tennessee tacked on another pair in the third inning. The first run came on a sac-fly by JT Mabry, his ninth RBI of the season, to make it a 3-0 ballgame and chase Kaleb Kantola from the ballgame after 2.1 innings. Bisons' reliever Chandler Giles gave up an RBI-single to Jackson Galloway with two down to make it 4-0.
The Blue Raiders added another three runs in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a two-RBI single by Luke Vinson and an RBI double by Peralta on the following at-bat to plate Vinson to push the Middle Tennessee lead to 7-0.
Other offensive notables for the Blue Raiders included Jennings, who hit his first home run of the year in a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI and Vinson, who reached three times with a pair of RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Peralta scored a run and drove in a run, going 2-for-5 in the leadoff spot of Jim Toman's lineup.
On the mound, a total of four Blue Raiders combined to toss a four-hit shutout.
Julian picked up his first win of the year on his birthday, tossing five shutout innings and picking up four strikeouts.
Freshman James Sells came out of the bullpen in the sixth inning and lasted a pair of innings, giving up just one hit while striking out the side in the seventh.
Daniel Dewey made his second appearance of the year, coming on in the eighth inning and striking out two in his only inning of work. Brycen Thomas preserved the shutout in the ninth by striking out two of his own.
"Everyone pitched well," Toman said. "Julian got the win, Sells pitched well, Dewey pitched well and Brycen did good. It helped us to not have to use a few guys for the weekend. It's been tough with the schedule early, but as a team we're firing on all cylinders."
