Slow start stymies Blue Raiders in loss to Charlotte
4/15/2022 10:49:00 PM | Baseball
JT Mabry went 2-for-4 at the dish, scoring one of MT's two runs, while Wyatt Morgan was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.
Head Coach Jim Toman was ejected from the game in the fifth inning after expressing disagreement over a safe/out on an attempted steal. Middle Tennessee (17-16, 8-6 C-USA) gave seven Charlotte (19-15, 5-9 C-USA) hitters free bases on either walks or hit batters.
"You have to realize as a pitcher that umpires are always a little bit tighter in the first couple of innings," Toman said. "Then by the third or fourth inning, they were pretty good. It just seemed like we were just missing our pitches by just a little bit. We ended up getting 14 hits, which should be good enough to win, but we didn't pitch well enough."
Eriq Swan took his fifth loss of the season on the mound, giving up six runs (five earned) while pitching into the third, but only completing two innings.
After Charlotte scored the game's first nine runs across their first four innings at the plate, MT finally got themselves on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Tatsunori Negishi came around to score after his two-out double on a Brian Dillingham single to right field.
Middle Tennessee would scratch across one more run in the bottom of the seventh, when the Niner right fielder threw a throw to third base on a Briggs Rutter single somewhere near Smyrna, plating Mabry, who went first to third on the hit, cutting the lead down to 10-2.
The Blue Raiders found some life in their bats at the last gasp, plating multiple runs in the bottom of the ninth. Luke Vinson scored on a Rutter single for MT's third run of the night, then two more runs came around on a bases loaded single from Nick Jones to give us our final margin, after the third Charlotte pitcher of the night finally retired the final two batters of the frame.
"We won the game after the fifth inning, you take away those first five innings, then we're pretty good," Rutter said. "When you play that well late and get the offense going, you definitely take that into the next game. We had a couple of guys saying 'carry that into tomorrow,' and our offense is potent enough to be able to do that."
The rubber match in the C-USA series with Charlotte will take place Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for noon at the Reese.
