AUBURN, Ala. – The Blue Raider women's and men's track and field teams completed their first day of the War Eagle Invitational on Friday. Day one was short, but saw a few Blue Raiders solidify themselves at the top of Conference USA for marks and times.
The Lone first-place finish on day one was freshman Vincent Yegon with a personal-best time of 14:04.96 in the men's 5000m. Yegon already held the best mark on conference with 14:17.47 before the meet but added a cushion to his lead today. Not far behind was junior Habtamu Geta who finished in fifth place, shaving half a second off of his personal best from the Raleigh Relays.
Graduate student Eusila Chepkemei finished in second during the women's 1500m with a time of 4:23.47, roughly seven seconds slower than the outdoor record. Chepkemei's time would sit in second place heading into the weekend, only .27 seconds behind the first-place holder.
Senior Joice Jebor improved on her lead for the women's 3000m steeplechase in conference with a new personal-best time of 10:25.67. Her new time was just over six seconds away from setting a new Blue Raider's record.
Junior Lyn'Nikka Vance took third place but set a new personal best in the long jump with a length of 6.07m. Her new best ranks second in conference heading into the weekend.
Junior Hillary Kimaiyo took fourth in today's men's 1500m dash with a time of 3:47.36. His time shaves a almost a second off of the current best mark in conference of 3:48.20.
