Nine-run sixth powers Blue Raiders to series win over 49ers

Jackson Galloway’s second grand slam of the season capped off the 12-plate appearance frame
Leading off the frame coming off the bench trailing 5-1, the pinch-hitting outfielder wanted to see some pitches and cover the plate with his swing, as head coach Jim Toman turned a plethora of righties to take advantage of Charlotte pitcher Spencer Giesting's southpaw windup. Ball, ball, foul, ball, ball, Galloway walked for Middle Tennessee's first runner of the inning.
As luck would have it, Galloway would be the team's first run that inning. As well as their ninth baserunner. And their ninth run, hitting a grand slam, his second of 2022, in his second plate-appearance in the sixth inning to put MT up 10-5 in an eventual 10-7 victory over the 49ers on Saturday at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
"It felt like we claimed back our field," Galloway said of the inning that saw 12 Blue Raiders come to the plate, scoring nine of them on just four hits. "We had some life going into the end of last night's game, but today started off a little slow again. We had that energy coming back. Everyone was up cheering, that was what we needed."
Middle Tennessee (18-16, 9-6 C-USA) managed just two hits prior to the sixth inning against Charlotte (19-16, 5-10 C-USA). But a strong approach and good eye kept the bat moving in that frame, as the Blue Raiders drew four walks to keep placing baserunners on the field. Timely baserunning, from JT Mabry beating out a fielder's choice to Brycen Thomas beating out a double play, kept the bases filled, until Galloway cleared them with his grand slam on a hanging slider.
"These guys just scrap," Toman said. "We get down a little bit, and they don't get too upset. I'm the only one that gets upset. They're young kids, so I think that's a good thing, they ain't nearly as miserable as me. They're loose."
MT starter Peyton Wigginton would give up a four-run lead to Charlotte to open the game on the back of three home runs, but Middle Tennessee finally scratched across a run in the bottom of the fourth. Fausto Lopez doubled down the third base line to start the inning, coming around to score on a single from Wyatt Morgan after advancing to third on a Mabry flyout.
Jaden Hamm gave up one run in the top of the sixth, increasing Charlotte's lead to 5-1, but Middle Tennessee would get their rally started in the bottom half. A leadoff walk and a pair of singles loaded the bases with nobody out. Wyatt Morgan then reached on a fielder's choice to score Galloway from third. Back-to-back full-count walks to Mason Speirs and Brett Coker then forced home Lopez and Mabry, cutting the lead to 5-4.
After a 49er pitching change, Thomas drove in the tying run on a fielder's choice to third base, leaving runners at the corners after the force out at second. Eston Snider then smacked in the Blue Raiders' fifth run of the frame, punching a single through the left side of the infield to plate Spiers from third, giving MT a 6-5 lead.
"We were kind of dry through the first couple of innings," Galloway said. "Things weren't going our way. That inning, you could see the steps being put into place. We were passing the bat, guys were getting on the train and it just flows."
After another walk issued by the Charlotte pitching staff loaded the bases, Galloway blasted the first pitch he saw in his second at-bat of the inning beyond the left field wall, his second grand slam of the season, blowing the game wide open by giving MT a 10-5 lead.
"I knew he was a heavy slider guy," Galloway smiled. "I was just happy to be in that situation, (I) put a good swing on it and didn't miss it."
Charlotte scored runs in the top of the seventh and top of the ninth, but a 3U-6 double play with the tying run at the plate ended the 49ers scoring threat and gave Middle Tennessee its fourth straight C-USA series win.
"We're starting to get a little bit of distance from the guys that are right there at the bottom, who are good programs," Toman said of the conference standings. "But one inning can change the whole outcome of the series."
The Blue Raiders will be back in action at the Reese on Tuesday night for 80s Night against Belmont. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
