WICHITA, Kan. – No. 17 Middle Tennessee men's tennis (24-4, 2-0) concluded the regular season on the road against Wichita State (12-13), sweeping the Shockers 5-0 at the Coleman Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.
"The boys bounced back and came out strong today fighting tough conditions with 18-19 MPH winds and a big crowd," Head Coach Jimmy Borendame said. "I'm proud of the guys and how they handled the adversity today. Happy to get back home and use a few good workdays before getting ready for the Conference USA Championship." Borendame said.
With the victory, the Blue Raiders tie the most wins in a single season in program history at 24 and earned the most wins in a regular season in program history. Middle Tennessee will need one more win to set the record for most wins in a season, which can be accomplished at the C-USA Tournament next weekend.
MT earned the doubles point over Wichita State with wins on court Nos. 1 and 2. No. 54 Oskar Brostrom Poulsen and Francisco Rocha clinched the point at 6-4 over Luka Mrsic and Orel Ovil, their first win as a duo since March 20 at Rice.
In singles play, Graduate Student Chris Edge finished his match first in his usual speedy fashion, taking down Alex Richards in straight 6-3 sets. Edge wraps up the regular season as the sole leader in wins on the team this Spring at 19-7.
Freshman Brostrom Poulsen placed the Raiders up three defeating Ray Lo at 6-2, 6-3. Oskar finishes the regular season at 16-6 and has won eight of his last 10 matches. With today's singles win, he moves to 23-8 this year (7-2 in the fall) and moves to seventh all-time in Blue Raider history in Freshman singles wins, tied with current teammate Pavel Motl and former Raiders Paul Goebel and Gonzalo Rashiatore.
No. 120 Stepan Holis and Motl finished simultaneously in their third sets to clinch the win over Wichita State at 5-0. Holis defeated Ovil at 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and Motl defeated Jackie Lin 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 to place MT at the threshold to win the match.
