DALLAS – Graduate Student Abigail Kwarteng and freshman Alaba Akintola are taking home their fourth-combined Conference USA Athlete of the Week honors of the outdoor season for their performances during the War Eagle Invitational hosted by Auburn, April 15th to April 16th.
Kwarteng competed in the high jump taking first place with a personal-best height of 1.92 meters. Her personal best is a Ghana national record (breaking her previous national record of 1.87m) and a program record beating the previous mark outdoor-program record of 1.87 meters set in 2012 by Ann Dudley and also tops the indoor-program record of Ann Dudley's in which she reached a height of 1.86 meters in 2013. The height of 1.92m ranks first in conference by .15 meters, third in the nation, and fifth in the world. This height qualified her for the Commonwealth games. This is her third athlete of the week honor in her third meet as a Blue Raider.
Alaba ran in the men's 100m and 200m at the War Eagle Invitational. During the 100 meter, Akintola took first with a personal-best time of 10.09 seconds. His new best is first in conference, t-5th best in the nation, and is t-15th in the world this season. During the 200 meter he took first place with a seasonal-personal best of 20.88 seconds, which is currently second best in conference. This is Alaba's first honor of the outdoor season and his second of the year.
