RUSTON, La. – The series is now even between Middle Tennessee and Louisiana Tech as Blue Raider baseball fell 2-4 Saturday afternoon at J.C. Love Field At Pat Patterson Park.
The Blue Raiders (20-17, 10-7 C-USA) recorded eight hits against the Bulldogs (28-12, 12-5 Conference USA) but couldn't capitalize on opportunities throughout the game.
Peyton Wigginton struck out four and allowed two earned runs in 6.1 innings. James Sells and Eriq Swan combined for 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Briggs Rutter continued his hot streak, recording his third multi-hit game in his last four games with a 2-for-3 day, which included a walk.
In Conference USA games this season, the pride of Perkiomenville, Pa. is 10-for-17 with six RBI, a home run and a double while posting a .632 on-base percentage.
Brett Coker finished the day 2-for-3 and drove in one run.
After Rutter reached on a leadoff walk in the second, Coker brought him in on an RBI double, his 18th RBI of the season, to give MT an early 1-0 lead.
Each starter pitched around base traffic for the next two innings, keeping the game at 1-0 until La Tech scored three in the bottom of the fifth to take a two-run lead (3-1).
Trailing 1-4, the eighth inning started with a pair of singles by Coker and Tatsunori Negishi to put runners on the corners. Eston Snider brought home Coker on a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 2-4.
Rutter and Mason Speirs each singled in the ninth to start a two-out Blue Raider rally. Coker then reached on a hit by pitch to load the bases and put the tying run in scoring position and the go-ahead run at first, but the comeback was stifled on a game-ending groundout.
