Blue Raiders Rally Late to Win Rubber Game at La Tech
4/24/2022 6:31:00 PM | Baseball
RUSTON, La. – Middle Tennessee baseball won its fifth consecutive Conference USA series with a 6-3 resilient, extra inning win over Louisiana Tech Sunday afternoon.
Trailing 1-3 late, the Blue Raiders (21-17, 11-7 C-USA) scored two runs in the eighth to force extra innings and three runs in the top of the 12th to win the rubber game vs. C-USA's second-place holder in the Bulldogs (28-13, 12-6 C-USA).
Strong performances on the mound by Jaden Hamm and Trent Seibert put the Blue Raiders in a position to win.
Hamm struck out a career-high eight batters in 5.2 innings pitched while Seibert struck out seven and threw 6.1 scoreless innings in his third win of the season.
La Tech took an early 1-0 lead until Brett Coker's fourth-inning double followed by a wild pitch paved the way for Eston Snider to drive in Coker on a sacrifice fly to even the score.
The Bulldogs scored two more in the fourth and fifth but wouldn't score again.
Seibert retired his first four batters faced and allowed just one hit over the final six innings. La Tech put the winning run on third after a walk and single in the 10th, but Seibert retired the next two batters via the punchout to end the threat and extend the game.
At the plate, JT Mabry started the rally in the eighth by reaching on a catcher's interference. Briggs Rutter walked and two wild pitches brought home Mabry and advanced Rutter to second. Jackson Galloway came through with an RBI single to tie it up at three.
Looking to strike in the 12th, Fausto Lopez and Tatsunori Negishi hit one-out singles to put traffic on.
A wild throw to first on a grounder to short brought home Lopez, giving MT a 4-3 lead. Gabe Jennings followed with a double down the line to extend MT's lead to 6-3.
Seibert took care of business in the 12th, forcing two outs in the air and a fielder's choice to end the game and the weekend.
Lopez and Coker each had two-hit days and Wyatt Morgan reached twice on a hit and hit by pitch. As a team, the Blue Raiders recorded 10 hits and hit four doubles.
MT did not homer in the three games vs. La Tech but combined to record 30 hits this weekend.
