Blue Raiders finish strong on second day of C-USA Championship

Wolf, Barnard finish the round in the top 10; MT six strokes out of match play
TEXARKANA, Texas – Middle Tennessee men's golf finished the second round of the Conference USA Championship in a tie for seventh place Tuesday at Texarkana Country Club. The Blue Raiders carded a 291 (+3) in the second round and sit at 585 (+9) heading into the third and final round of stroke play, six strokes behind fourth-place Rice for the final spot in the match play portion of the tournament.
On a sunny day with temperatures reaching the low 70s, MT finished the round strong, recording 10 birdies on the front nine after starting on the 10th hole. Michael Barnard leads the Blue Raiders at 140 (-4) and is tied for fourth place after carding his second straight score of 70 (-2) Tuesday.
"Great rounds today from Nick and Mike," head coach Mark McEntire said. "I thought Kevin rebounded nicely as well. We just had a hard time getting and keeping momentum. I hope the finish we had gives them the confidence to keep it going tomorrow and get inside the top four."
Barnard notched five birdies Tuesday to tie for the team lead. The Hendersonville, Tenn., native is four strokes off the individual lead and has a team-leading nine birdies in the first two rounds.
Nick Wolf's 69 (-3) was MT's best score of the first two rounds Tuesday. He ended the day in a tie for 10th at 143 (-1) after birdieing five of his final 11 holes on the day. Wolf wrapped up the round with just one hole over par.
Kevin Jegers carded a 74 (+2) Tuesday, shaving four strokes off his first-round score to end the day tied for 47th at 152 (+8). Jegers used a pair of birdies to go 1-under on the front nine.
Owen Stamper also wrapped up play at 152 (+8) after carding a 78 (+6) Tuesday. Stamper was 2-under through three holes after an eagle on hole 12 but could not maintain that momentum.
Connor Daly rounded out the Blue Raider lineup with a 79 (+7) Tuesday, ending play in a tie for 60th at 155 (+11).
Barnard is 7-under on par 5 holes through two rounds, the best score among the 65-player field on those holes. His nine birdies are two shy of the tournament lead.
Florida Atlantic remains in the lead at 567 (-9).
The third round of stroke play kicks off Wednesday with tee times starting at 8:00 a.m.
