HOUSTON – It took 10 innings but Middle Tennessee baseball clinched the series over Rice with a 5-4 win Saturday.
The Blue Raiders (28-20, 16-10) set a new season high in hits (17)–their highest hit total since April 7, 2019 against Western Kentucky.
Despite not factoring into the decision, Trent Seibert allowed a run in the second inning but finished his outing with five scoreless innings vs. the Owls (13-38, 6-20). Seibert struck out four batters in 7.1 innings pitched.
JT Mabry extended his hitting streak to seven and started the Blue Raider scoring in the third on an RBI single, scoring Brian Dillingham to tie the score at one apiece. The flurry of singles continued as Wyatt Morgan, Jackson Galloway and Briggs Rutter each singled consecutively to give MT its first lead of the afternoon at 3-1.
Mason Speirs hit his second double of the day and later scored thanks to Fausto Lopez's RBI single, extending the Blue Raider lead to 4-1 in the sixth.
Rice rallied to score three runs on four hits in the ninth to tie it. MT recovered in the 10th as Speirs followed a Brett Coker double with an RBI single to left to put the Blue Raiders back up at 5-4.
Speirs set a new career high with four hits in five at-bats. The first four batters in the Blue Raider lineup in Lopez, Mabry, Morgan and Galloway each recorded two hits. Dillingham added two singles.
Galloway now has a hit in 14 of his last 15 games while Coker extended his hitting streak to seven and his doubles streak to three. He has six extra-base hits in his last three games, five of which are doubles.
James Sells improved to 4-1 on the season after throwing the last 1.2 innings.
