Middle Tennessee’s six-game win streak halted in 7-2 loss at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn.— Middle Tennessee's (29-21, 17-10 C-USA) six-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday evening at Hawkins Field. Vanderbilt (35-16, 14-13 SEC) rode a pair of two-out extra base hits in a big fourth inning to a 7-2 win over the Blue Raiders in MT's final midweek game of the season.
"There were a few innings that we gave them three or four outs," said Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim Toman. "I think the speed of the game got to us a little bit. That was the first time we've seen that type of speed this year."
Middle Tennessee got itself on the board first in the top of the second inning thanks to a sacrifice fly to center field by catcher Mason Speirs to make it 1-0. Speirs' sac-fly followed a pair of hits by Briggs Rutter, who scored on the play, and Brett Coker to lead off the inning.
Vanderbilt tied it with a two-out hit in the second inning and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third when right fielder Spencer Jones stole home.
Middle Tennessee went with freshman James Sells to get the start on the mound. The Tullahoma, Tenn. native tossed three innings and allowed two earned runs before giving way to Jack Julian in the fourth inning.
Julian was tagged for three runs in the fourth, coming from a two-RBI triple from Jones and an RBI double from Dominic Keegan that made it a 5-1 ballgame.
Middle Tennessee manufactured a two-out run of its own in the bottom of the fifth when Jackson Galloway's team-high 32nd RBI of the year scored Fausto Lopez and brought the score to 5-2.
Lopez, who stole second on the pitch prior, got a good jump when Galloway hit a liner off the wall that slants toward fair territory just past the first base bag. Galloway was able to advance to second on the play to record his third double in his last 22 plate appearances.
Vanderbilt added another pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings off of Julian, spelling the end of the night for the right-hander. Brycen Thomas took over with one out in the seventh and got the final two outs of the inning. Jalen Wirtz tossed a scoreless eighth inning for Middle Tennessee.
Lopez led the Blue Raiders offensively, recording two hits with a run and a stolen base. Coker was able to extend his hitting streak to nine games with a single in his first at-bat of the night. Eston Snider had a two-hit night, going 2-for-3 with a sac bunt in his first at-bat that helped set up the game's first run.
"Tonight was a good learning tool for our young guys, especially," Toman said. "I told them if we play well this weekend against Southern Miss and play well in the (Conference USA) Tournament, we might be back here playing these guys again."
