MT Drops Game One to Southern Miss
5/19/2022 10:10:00 PM | Baseball
The Blue Raiders (29-22, 17-11 C-USA) were able to take a 4-3 lead after five innings, but a three-hit top of the sixth propelled the Golden Eagles (39-14, 21-7 C-USA) to a 7-4 lead that they never relinquished.
"With nine walks, a couple of hit by pitches, a couple wild pitches, a couple of passed balls and the four errors, you don't win many games," head coach Jim Toman said. "And usually the score is worse than that. But that's why they're good, they get better as the game goes on with their pitchers, they've got a pretty good staff."
Briggs Rutter led MT at the plate, going 2-for-3 while getting hit by the pitch. Eston Snider and Mason Spiers each doubled and scored a run on the night. The 5-8 spots in the MT lineup combined for five of the Blue Raiders' eight hits.
Trent Seibert took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) in one inning of work. Zach Keenan was effective in his start, giving up three runs (two earned) in five innings while striking out five Golden Eagles.
After USM scored two runs in the top of the first, MT quickly struck back to get back into the game. Fausto Lopez wore the first pitch of the game, advancing to second on a sac bunt and scoring on an RBI-single from Wyatt Morgan to cut the USM lead to 2-1.
After the Golden Eagles added a run in the top of the fourth, the Blue Raiders took advantage of a USM defensive miscue, loading the bases with two outs to plate Spiers and Snider after an error on the second baseman.
In the next half inning, Jackson Galloway's one out single started a rally, where a hit-by-pitch and another single loaded the bases and chased USM starter Tanner Hall from the game. Snider then punched a sacrifice fly to right-center field to score Galloway and give MT its first lead, 4-3.
USM would outscore MT 6-0 over the final four frames, plating at least one run in every inning but the ninth to pull away for the final 9-4 margin.
MT will face Southern Miss in game two of its final C-USA series tomorrow, May 20. First pitch for the Friday evening game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Reese.
"Tomorrow, we've got to flush it, we've got to play better," Toman said. "We're going to give the ball to (Eriq) Swan and whoever else wants the ball. Swan is very capable, I told him he needed to do an outing like he did against Old Dominion."
