MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee baseball fell behind early and never recovered on Friday night at Reese Smith, Jr. Field, falling 17-0 to Southern Miss.
The Blue Raiders (29-23, 17-12 C-USA) scattered six hits across the game's nine innings, while the Golden Eagles (40-14, 22-7 C-USA) turned their 18 hits into nearly as many runs, scoring in all but two frames on the evening.
Every single MT pitcher that appeared on the mound for the Blue Raiders gave up at least one earned run, with starter Eriq Swan earning his sixth loss of the season. Head Coach Jim Toman highlighted the absence of Peyton Wigginton (illness) and Jaden Hamm (season-ending injury) from this weekend's pitching staff as a test of the Blue Raiders' depth on the mound against a top conference opponent.
Briggs Rutter and Fausto Lopez each secured two hits on the night to lead MT at the plate. The Blue Raiders smacked zero extra base hits on Friday night. Southern Miss has walked no Middle Tennessee batters through the first two games of the series.
MT will celebrate the senior class tomorrow on Senior Day. It will also be the final Salute to Veterans Saturday of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Reese.
