Blue Raiders Come Out on Top in Battle at Georgia State
5/4/2022 8:05:00 PM | Baseball
In a game that featured three lead changes, one tie and two weather delays, the Blue Raiders (23-19) used timely hitting and an impressive outing by Brycen Thomas to beat the Panthers (25-21).
Thomas threw 4.1 scoreless innings, struck out four and held GSU to three hits.
After the first pitch was delayed 20 minutes due to rain, Fausto Lopez started the early attack with a leadoff double in the first but the senior shortstop was stranded at second to end the inning.
Facing a 1-0 deficit after Georgia State's solo shot, Brett Coker hit another MT leadoff double in the second. Eston Snider then beat out a bunt single, Tatsunori Negishi walked and Coker evened the score by coming home on a wild pitch.
With runners on second and third, Brian Dillingham, who threw out a runner trying to score from second in the previous inning, hit a sac fly to give the Blue Raiders their first lead. Luke Vinson dropped down a squeeze bunt to bring home Negishi and add another run to make it 3-1.
The Panthers scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead.
In the fifth, Dillingham singled, Vinson was hit by a pitch and Dillingham stole third to set up an RBI fielder's choice by Lopez, which cut the deficit to 6-4. Jackson Galloway followed with an RBI single to score Lopez as MT pulled within one (6-5).
Middle Tennessee trailed 7-5 in the bottom of the fifth as the threat of inclement weather forced the tarp on the field and an hour and a half weather delay.
Play resumed after over an hour of a delay. Thomas escaped a jam on the mound coming out of the break. Coker started the sixth with a triple and came around to score, bringing MT back within one at 7-6.
Thomas pitched another scoreless inning in the seventh. Another opportunity came for the Blue Raiders at the plate to drive in a run in the eighth. With runners on the corners, Vinson squeezed home the runner at third, this time Snider, to tie the score at seven.
Later in the eighth, JT Mabry's grounder broke through the left side of the infield, scoring two runs and giving Middle Tennessee a 9-7 lead.
Thomas shut the door and completed his impressive outing in the ninth with two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 inning.
Coker finished 3-for-5, a home run shy of the cycle while Lopez, Snider and Dillingham each recorded two hits. Vinson and Mabry added two RBI apiece.
MT has now won its last six midweek games.
