Blue Raiders fall in game two at Western Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Blue Raiders (19-33, 6-17 C-USA) dropped their second game against the WKU Hilltoppers (34-11, 16-7 C-USA) on Saturday afternoon at WKU Softball Complex.
The Blue Raiders led the Hilltoppers early on, leading WKU in hits 4-2 through the first five and a half innings of play with a double from freshman Laura Mealer and singles from junior Kaylee Richetto, sophomore Amaya Harris, and freshman Anyce Harvey. However, the Hilltoppers were the first to capitalize on their at-bats.
Following leadoff single from Abby Newman in the fifth, a sacrifice bunt from TJ Webster advanced Newman to second before a two-out single to left field put a Hilltopper 60 feet away. A Blue Raider error allowed Newman to score and break the stalemate with WKU taking a 1-0 advantage into the sixth.
Bailey Curry opened the sixth for the Hilltoppers with a leadoff single. Kasia Parks came in to pinch run for Curry before a sacrifice bunt moved her to second. Then Jordan Ridge connected on an RBI-triple down the right-field line to double the Hilltoppers' lead to 2-0. A Hilltopper walk and a sacrifice bunt put two Hilltoppers in scoring position, before an RBI-single plated Ridge to push WKU's lead to three, 3-0, but sophomore Shelby Sargent delivered a strike to freshman catcher Ava Tepe to keep the second Hilltopper from scoring and close the inning.
Harvey led the Blue Raiders, going 2-for-3 in the contest. Richetto and Mealer went 1-for-2 on the day for MT, while sophomore Amaya Harris also recorded a hit in the contest, going 1-for-3 against the Hilltoppers.
In the circle, freshman Claire Woods opened the game and went 5.0 innings for the Blue Raiders, allowing just two runs, including only one earned run, on five hits, and throwing one strikeout. Sophomore Danielle Taitt closed out the game, throwing 1.0 inning and allowing just one earned run on two hits.
