MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – When former President Richard Nixon signed the Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 into law, it changed the landscape of athletic and academic opportunities for women nationwide.
June 23, 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the date the bill was signed and Middle Tennessee Athletics plans to honor 50 years of comprehensive excellence in all areas of women's sports through engagement opportunities and events throughout the 2022-23 year.
"Thanks to the efforts of many pioneers, the opportunities for girls, young ladies and women were opened when Title IX was passed," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "I have been able to see the impact of Title IX at both the high school and collegiate levels. The law removed barriers for girls and women while also opening doors for greater opportunity.
"Title IX changed the face of women's athletics. As a result of the passage of this bill, there is equality as women would be granted the same scholarship opportunities as men. Its impact has also been realized at the professional level. Women have an opportunity to turn their sport into a career at the professional level, and that would not have been possible without the advent of Title IX."
Fans will have the opportunity to follow our year-long celebration at GoBlueRaiders.com/TitleIX, specifically designed to celebrate 50 years of Title IX and its impact on women's athletics at Middle Tennessee, while keeping fans informed of upcoming events.
Title IX, in part, stats that no one in the United States will be excluded from programs or denied the proper benefits for programs "on the basis of sex."
Middle Tennessee now boasts nine women's programs with legendary coaches and championship teams. Female athletes have flourished at Middle Tennessee since the mid-1970s – when women were first offered athletic scholarships to Middle Tennessee – to present. They have thrived in the athletic arena, as well as academically.
The goal of Middle Tennessee Athletics through this year-long celebration is to not only honor the successes of Blue Raider female athletes, but also inspire philanthropy. Through philanthropy, Middle Tennessee Athletics will work to enhance the educational and athletic related resources provided to help shape the next generation of female leaders.
