MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Coming to Middle Tennessee by way of Wabash Valley Community College, TreVon Smith is a junior guard from Campbellsville, Ky. Smith averaged 14.6 points per game as a sophomore in 2021-22 while shooting 42.6 percent from the floor and 38.8 percent from 3-point range. In his freshman year, he earned First Team All-Region 24 honors at the NJCAA level, averaging 15.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.
As prep player, Smith earned 5th Region Player of the Year and Kentucky All-Star honors while being a Kentucky Mr. Basketball candidate at Taylor County High School. The son of Adam Smith and Jessica and Ebb Spurling, he amassed 1,925 points in his prep career.
Following practice in the MT Rec Center, Smith chatted with MT Athletics' Thomas Donley about his left handed shooting, old basketball memories, and what he's binging on Netflix.
Why did you pick Middle Tennessee?
I picked Middle Tennessee because the coaching staff was on me harder and earlier than anybody else. They made it a goal [to prioritize me].They trusted me. They were rockin' with me for a while.
Who do you model your game after?
I like watching lefthanded players like me – like Brandon Jennings, Goran Dragic, James Harden, Mike Conley – and just try to model what they do and how they move, being lefthanded.
What has been your first impression of MT?
I love it. It's right down the road for one, and for two, it just feels like home. The guys are really nice. They're cool. And they just welcomed me with open arms.
Who has taught you the most about the game of basketball?
That would have to be my dad. He just ever since I was young. He played college basketball [at Lindsey Wilson], and my uncle and great uncle played at Western, so really, basketball has just been in our family. So I really got knowledge from all of them.
What's our favorite thing to do off the court?
I like to chill and watch Netflix, play games, and get rest. That's really it. Right now I'm watching a series called The Mist on Netflix.
What are your goals for this season?
This season, I just really want to come in and help win. I saw last year, I committed before the season, but I saw their success, and we've got a lot of the team back. So I just want to win, carry on what they did last year, and play a role in that this year.
If you could go back in time and relive any moment in basketball history, what moment would you pick?
I would go back and relive my freshman year of high school when we went to state and played at Rupp Arena. That was probably the best year our school (Taylor County High School) has had, basketball-wise. That was just a good experience. I had two good lead guards. We had a documentary made for us. That was probably the best basketball memory I've had.
How has the experience you gained at the junior college level helped your transition to Division I?
Just having two years of college basketball under my belt really helps me understand what's going on. Obviously, it's a different level, but I feel like just knowing how to be a college athlete and handle yourself and go about your day, coming in prepared, I feel like that gives me more of an edge than if I would have come here right out of high school.
