KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee men's tennis opened its 2022 fall slate at the Tennessee Hidden Duals on Friday morning and afternoon.
In the morning session, MTSU started the tournament against Tennessee, which ended the 2021-22 season with a No. 6 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranking.
The Blue Raiders picked up a doubles win as well as a singles win.
Francisco Rocha and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen dominated and earned a 6-2 doubles win over Tennessee's Kent Hunter and Shunsuke Mitsui. The duo of Rocha and Brostrom Poulsen won all four of their service games.
Shu Matsuoka and Pavel Motl, along with Ondrej Horak and Marcel Kamrowski, fell in their respective doubles matches.
In singles, Kamrowski fought back from down a set to defeat Gabriele Brancatelli (1-6, 6-4, 2-2, ret.). Tennessee went on to win the remaining singles matches.
Despite the result, the Blue Raiders remained competitive throughout the morning. Three of the six singles matches lasted all three sets.
In the afternoon session, the three Blue Raider freshmen took on opponents from Illinois. Horak and Kamrowski played doubles, while Matsuoka played a singles match. The Fighting Illini took the win in both matches.
ASSISTANT COACH ANDREA CALIGIANA
"Playing the first match of year and, for some guys, their first college match versus a back-to-back NCAA final four team is definitely not easy. Coach Jimmy [Borendame] and I are aware of the potential of our team, and we know we can compete with anyone. All matches were close and great battles. I am really happy with Marcel [Kamrowski], who got his first collegiate win today. Francisco [Rocha] had a super close battle against one of the best players in the nation. Oskar [Brostrom Poulsen] went toe-to-toe with one of the best freshmen from last year. This is already Tennessee's second event of the fall, and that gave them more confidence in tight situations today."
