MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee head football coach Derek Mason announced today the hiring of Bryce Lewis as the program's secondary coach. Lewis is a former player under Mason at Vanderbilt.
"During his time as a player, you could see his ability to process the game and how easily that transferred to the football field," said Mason. "He is an extremely good teacher and technician and has a tremendous grasp of Xs and Os. Exceptional at building relationships and recruiting, Bryce can do all the things fundamentally needed and necessary in today's college game to develop elite talent."
Lewis makes his way to the Blue Raiders after spending the previous two years at Oklahoma State as a defensive analyst. In his two years, the Cowboys played in the 2022 Guaranteed Rate Bowl and made the Big 12 championship game in 2023.
In 2021, Lewis joined Mason's defensive staff at Auburn as the lead Defensive Quality Control assistant. The Tigers ranked fourth in the SEC in scoring defense and went on to play in the Birmingham Bowl.
Prior to Auburn, Lewis spent three seasons on the football staff at Vanderbilt under Mason. He served as a quality control staff member.
"I am extremely blessed and honored to join this staff and be a part of the Blue Raider community," said Lewis. "Being able to come back home is huge, because the Nashville area is where I started my family and spent the majority of my playing and coaching career.
"There are no questions with Coach Mason because I understand the standard and what we need to do in order to have success. It's just great to be around family and get to work."
In 2018, Lewis' first year on the Vanderbilt staff, he assisted Commodore secondary coaches as a graduate assistant.
Lewis earned three varsity letters as a defensive back for the Commodores from 2015-17. Playing through injuries, Lewis appeared in 32 career games, earning two starting assignments. He registered 16 solo tackles, 21 total tackles and one interception during his career.
A product of Parkview (Ga.) High School, Lewis completed a bachelor's degree in special education in May 2018. He earned a master's in learning, diversity and urban studies from Vanderbilt's Peabody College in May 2019.
Lewis and the former Kryslynn Davidson were married in 2018.
