Blue Raiders fall in overtime to Terriers
12/2/2023 10:48:00 PM | Men's Basketball
A nine-point second-half lead was not quite enough to pull away on Saturday.
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee men's basketball came up short in overtime on Saturday night in the Murphy Center, falling 74-64 to Wofford after leading late in the second half.
The Blue Raiders (4-5) led by as many as nine points with six and half minutes to play, but a 9-0 run from the Terriers (3-5) tied the game in the closing minutes. A Justin Bufford layup and a pair of Jacob Johnson free throws each retook the lead late in the second half, giving chances for MTSU to ice the game with one stop in the closing minute and a half, but Wofford was able to make baskets in the paint both times down the court to tie the game back up, 62-62, at the end of regulation.
The overtime period was all Terriers, as Wofford started the five-minute frame with 5-0 run. MTSU was able to cut the lead to three with a floater from Johnson. But the Terriers scored the next two trips down the court and made their free throws to end the game on a 7-0 run to claim the 10-point win.
Jestin Porter led the Blue Raiders with 15 points. Justin Bufford followed closely behind with 13 points while dishing out a team-high four assists. Jared Coleman-Jones was 4-for-5 from the floor for eight points while grabbing 11 rebounds. Jalen Jordan scored 12 points off the bench, nine points coming from beyond the arc. Ty Mosely also was effective off the bench, scoring seven points
By the Numbers
42-22: Points in the paint advantage for Wofford on Saturday. The Terriers were able to drive into the paint most of the night, with six of those 42 points coming in overtime.
21: Bench points for MTSU on Saturday, led by 12 points from Jalen Jordan. The Blue Raiders have scored at least 21 points off the bench in back-to-back games.
3: Blocks by Chris Loofe, a career-high for the freshman.
Blue Raider Notes
Mosley had a season-high seven points Saturday night.
Jordan scored 12 points for his second consecutive game in double figures.
Loofe had a season and career-high five total rebounds.
Wofford had zero bench points or second chance points in the first half.
Wofford's 10 bench points are the fewest allowed by Middle Tennessee this season.
The Blue Raiders shot 75% from the free throw line, their third consecutive game north of 70% from the stripe.
The loss snaps a three-game winning streak in overtime games dating back to 2022-23, and a four-game winning streak in regular season overtime matchups dating back to 2019-20.
Coleman-Jones' 11 rebounds are a career-high for the junior, as well as the team's high mark in rebounds this year.
Thoughts from Head Coach Nick McDevitt
"Congratulations to Wofford. They made some plays when they needed to, particularly down the stretch. I feel like our guys, they're playing hard. Defensively, we look pretty good at times, most of the time, really. Just on the offensive end of the floor, we just aren't comfortable right now. We aren't in an offensive rhythm right now. We're not shooting the ball very well right now, particularly from behind the (three-point) line. Until we do, you're never kind of comfortable in the game, just because you know that there's the chance you're not going to rattle off three, four, five threes in a row and all of a sudden, a six, seven, eight-point game becomes a 15-point game."
