MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Since singing five student-athletes during the early signing period, Middle Tennessee Soccer has added four signees to its 2023 class and is set to enter the regular season with nine new roster members.
Midfielder Olivia Ouzounidis, midfielder/forward Hannah Murphy, defender Dylan Barnes and goalkeeper Calais Butts all join the signing class and will be part of the 2023 Blue Raider roster in time for the regular season.
Murphy joins the Blue Raiders from Lakewood Co., where she played for Lakewood High School. Murphy's on-field accolades include being named to the first team All-Conference and honorable mention All-State teams, while playing club soccer for Colorado Rapids ECNL.
Murphy also boasts academic excellence, earning Academic All-State first team honors. Murphy chose MTSU because both the soccer and academics is top level, and the team's family atmosphere. When she's not on the pitch, Murphy enjoys snowboarding.
"Hannah is a creative and versatile midfielder with strong tactical and technical qualities," said Blue Raider head coach Aston Rhoden. "She can unlock defenses with her 1v1 attacking skills, passing range, and her vision. Hannah will add some flexibility to our midfield and will be a fun player to watch."
Ouzounidis joins the Blue Raiders from Stockholm, Sweden. The midfielder has played club soccer for Älvsjö AIK, since the age of 6. It was with her club that she made the national finals in Helsingborg in 2020, which Ouzounidis considers to be her favorite moment as a player.
Ouzounidis aspires to play in the Swedish first division, Damallsvenskan. She picked Middle Tennessee for the academic level, the school facilities, the location and the program's track record of acquiring international talent. Ouzounidis intends to major in some combination of math and computer science, having been an award-winning student in high school.
"Olivia is a very versatile midfield player. She has great vision, awareness, and the ability score from distance with both feet. Her experience playing at a top level in Sweden will be an asset to young team," said Rhoden.
Barnes meanwhile joins the Blue Raiders from Friends School in Baltimore, Md. She has played high school soccer under coach Isaiah Noreiga and competed in club for Baltimore Celtic GA under coach Michael Scott.
Barnes is a two-time IAAM All-Conference recipient, and also lettered in high school basketball and lacrosse. Barnes chose MTSU because of the atmosphere of the women's soccer team and staff and felt welcomed upon her arrival. She plans to study biochemistry, with the goal of becoming an anesthesiologist.
"Dylan is relentless and competitive defender capable of playing as a center back or outside back. She's dominant in the air, has great speed and athleticism and is a physical presence in the back. Dylan versatility will make us more flexible in the back" Rhoden said.
Butts is an Edmonton, Alberta native, but she comes to Murfreesboro from Mount Kelly School, a prep academy just outside of Plymouth, England. Butts represented the high-level academy and was Grade 12 MVP.
The goalkeeper helped lead Mount Kelly to a ISFA National 7s Championship. Butts began looking for a US College in early 2022, and none of them felt right to her until she had a call with MTSU. She cites the facilities and the personalities of the coaches on her choice to come to Murfreesboro.
The Canadian's favorite hobby is Olympic Lifting, and her father Shaughn was also a golfer at Ferris State University.
"Calais is very quick and athletic goalkeeper with strong shot stopping skills. She plays well with her feet and does a great job of managing her box. Cal's playing experience will make our goalkeeper union stronger and add more quality depth to that position," Rhoden said.
